[00:00:56] Every week, every week

[00:00:57] That greeting

[00:00:58] And with me of course, my prima

[00:00:59] It's like being home

[00:01:00] Oh look at that, it's Kevin

[00:01:01] Of course, interrupts you know

[00:01:02] If Chukume is not here, the spirit of Chukume is moving through

[00:01:05] Through Kevin Garcia, you know

[00:01:07] He's always inside me in some way or another

[00:01:09] Wait

[00:01:10] Oh

[00:01:10] Well, well

[00:01:12] You do live in the same neighborhood

[00:01:15] So, moving along with us, of course

[00:01:18] My prima and yours

[00:01:19] Elia Madria Madrid

[00:01:21] At Spice Illustrations

[00:01:22] Say what's up Elia

[00:01:23] What's up Elia?

[00:01:25] A little wave, just a little wave

[00:01:26] Just a tiny wave

[00:01:27] Just a little wave

[00:01:28] Just a tiny wave

[00:01:30] Nice

[00:01:30] I don't know

[00:01:31] Oh, well, yeah

[00:01:33] Yeah, everyone had crowns on

[00:01:35] So I drew one last minute

[00:01:38] And I have this ridiculously heavy one

[00:01:40] That I found at a flea market

[00:01:42] Or something

[00:01:43] Royalty

[00:01:43] Nice, nice

[00:01:45] And tonight we have some special guests with us

[00:01:48] Long time coming

[00:01:48] I'm really excited to have these guests on today

[00:01:50] We have from a beloved convention

[00:01:53] That we have here in Texas

[00:01:54] From Mixamerican

[00:01:55] We have Javi and Nino

[00:01:57] Javi and Nino

[00:01:58] Say what's up 12 primos out there

[00:02:02] Thanks for having us

[00:02:04] Yeah

[00:02:06] Yeah, exactly

[00:02:07] Well, I'm flashing the crown

[00:02:09] Elia had her crown earlier too

[00:02:11] But mine is just kind of an accidental deal

[00:02:13] Even though

[00:02:14] You look good in a crown

[00:02:15] You do look good

[00:02:16] You basically

[00:02:17] I'm thinking you got that biggie energy, you know

[00:02:20] I was thinking that

[00:02:21] I mean, like

[00:02:23] Yep, I can see it

[00:02:24] I can see it

[00:02:24] Go to the grocery store with it on, for sure

[00:02:26] I see the cool Cosby sweater

[00:02:28] That's what I need, you know

[00:02:29] Definitely, definitely

[00:02:30] Definitely, definitely

[00:02:31] The reason I love Mixamerican

[00:02:32] I like it for a lot of reasons, actually

[00:02:34] Because I enjoy whenever we have the Latino cons

[00:02:35] Like the Latinx Expo in California

[00:02:38] The Latino Comic Con in Dallas

[00:02:39] But I also love that it's a pun

[00:02:44] Mixamerican

[00:02:44] And I just, I cannot get over that

[00:02:46] I love the pun of it all

[00:02:47] It's so good

[00:02:48] Yeah

[00:02:48] You know

[00:02:50] Some people really like it

[00:02:51] Some people are like

[00:02:52] I don't like that name

[00:02:53] So, I mean

[00:02:54] What?

[00:02:55] At least you get a good response out of it

[00:02:56] Well

[00:02:56] Yeah

[00:02:57] Originally it was going to be

[00:02:59] Mexicon

[00:02:59] But it was just too

[00:03:00] We were leaving out

[00:03:03] The American in that

[00:03:04] You know

[00:03:04] So I don't want to have a

[00:03:05] But I don't like Mexicon

[00:03:06] As much as I like Mexamerican

[00:03:08] Hold on

[00:03:08] I don't know why

[00:03:09] I like Mexicon

[00:03:11] I think we need to make something happen

[00:03:13] With Mexicon

[00:03:14] I didn't trademark it

[00:03:16] Like Mex-E

[00:03:16] Like Y

[00:03:17] Mex-E

[00:03:18] Con

[00:03:19] Hey, that's pretty good

[00:03:20] Where were you nine years ago?

[00:03:22] Man

[00:03:22] Wait, wait

[00:03:23] Mex-E

[00:03:24] With a little E

[00:03:25] Because it's the online version of Mexamerican

[00:03:28] Oh my god

[00:03:29] Yes

[00:03:30] Alright

[00:03:31] I like the E

[00:03:33] The E con

[00:03:34] It's con with everyone else

[00:03:36] Like togetherness

[00:03:37] The comunidad

[00:03:37] We're working on the franchising

[00:03:39] Of Mexamerican

[00:03:40] There you go

[00:03:41] We're going to have a brainstorm

[00:03:43] Great brainstorm

[00:03:44] This is that brainstorm

[00:03:45] But we're going to get into the origins

[00:03:47] I want to know about it

[00:03:48] How it came about

[00:03:49] I want to know

[00:03:50] If you guys ever

[00:03:51] Kind of go at each other's throats

[00:03:52] Because you know

[00:03:53] You're working on an event together

[00:03:54] It happens

[00:03:55] I fight with my wife

[00:03:55] Building fucking furniture

[00:03:56] I can't imagine running

[00:03:58] A fucking convention

[00:03:58] Honestly

[00:03:59] That sounds like

[00:04:00] An exciting type of furniture

[00:04:02] Well

[00:04:03] Fighting furniture

[00:04:04] Or fucking furniture

[00:04:06] Can I just say

[00:04:07] I really love that

[00:04:07] That segment you guys have

[00:04:09] Where Kevin fills the hole

[00:04:11] It's one of my

[00:04:11] I don't know

[00:04:12] I have no idea what you speak

[00:04:15] You get it man

[00:04:16] I mean

[00:04:17] I see it like

[00:04:18] You know

[00:04:18] The extreme makeover

[00:04:21] Home edition

[00:04:21] Where they're like

[00:04:22] Move that bus

[00:04:22] That's everybody's yelling that

[00:04:24] Fill that hole

[00:04:26] That's how I see it

[00:04:27] But

[00:04:28] Honestly

[00:04:29] It's a calling

[00:04:30] And I answered

[00:04:32] You know what's funny enough

[00:04:33] They're giving me a stage

[00:04:34] This year

[00:04:34] Kevin Garcia

[00:04:35] We'll talk about that

[00:04:36] Here in a second

[00:04:37] Yeah

[00:04:37] But

[00:04:38] Primos

[00:04:38] Remember

[00:04:39] Follow us

[00:04:39] At My Primos Podcast

[00:04:40] For all

[00:04:41] Your primo needs

[00:04:43] And enjoyment

[00:04:44] Of course

[00:04:45] Myprimospodcast.com

[00:04:46] For the episodes

[00:04:47] Our reviews

[00:04:48] Which I am

[00:04:49] Almost done with my Joker review

[00:04:50] Which we talked about last week

[00:04:51] Which we'll chime in here later

[00:04:53] And Anino has thoughts too

[00:04:54] But of course guys

[00:04:56] I want to just thank you guys

[00:04:57] For listening

[00:04:57] I'm going to welcome our guests here

[00:04:59] Primos

[00:05:00] Let's dive right in

[00:05:01] And

[00:05:02] Let's just start

[00:05:03] Anino

[00:05:03] How about you man

[00:05:04] Tell me

[00:05:04] Like

[00:05:05] One day

[00:05:06] You're having a smoothie

[00:05:08] You're done

[00:05:09] Like pushing 285

[00:05:11] And then you just walk across the street

[00:05:13] And you run into Javi

[00:05:14] Like

[00:05:14] Ah man

[00:05:15] If only

[00:05:16] Like how did this become a thing

[00:05:18] Like how did you guys just

[00:05:19] Start this idea

[00:05:21] To start a convention

[00:05:22] And kind of

[00:05:23] Elaborate for me

[00:05:25] I mean that's

[00:05:26] The story's just about right

[00:05:28] With the exception of

[00:05:29] Javier

[00:05:30] Really had the idea going

[00:05:32] First

[00:05:33] He had

[00:05:34] You know

[00:05:34] He had that running through his mind

[00:05:36] And

[00:05:37] Called me up

[00:05:37] And said

[00:05:38] Hey

[00:05:38] How'd you like to help me out with this

[00:05:40] I was just removed out of

[00:05:41] Or had left a job

[00:05:43] Working primarily

[00:05:44] In the cultural arts

[00:05:45] At the time

[00:05:46] And I was looking to connect back

[00:05:48] To cultural arts

[00:05:49] And events

[00:05:50] And things of that nature

[00:05:51] So it was just perfect

[00:05:52] I mean he called me at the right time

[00:05:53] And really have enjoyed doing it

[00:05:55] And you know

[00:05:57] Connecting with all the

[00:05:58] Artists and creators out there

[00:06:00] And just

[00:06:01] Doing something

[00:06:02] More so for

[00:06:03] The culture

[00:06:04] And the community

[00:06:04] As opposed to

[00:06:05] More like

[00:06:06] Corporate type

[00:06:07] Things

[00:06:09] Javi

[00:06:10] What about you man

[00:06:10] Like what

[00:06:11] What spurred that thought then

[00:06:12] Man like

[00:06:13] What was that like

[00:06:14] Eureka moment

[00:06:15] That you know

[00:06:16] Falling upside down

[00:06:17] Onto the toilet

[00:06:18] Like what

[00:06:18] What was that moment for you

[00:06:20] That happens to me a lot

[00:06:21] But besides that

[00:06:23] There's a

[00:06:24] So have you ever seen that movie

[00:06:25] My Blue Heaven

[00:06:26] I don't know

[00:06:27] Yeah I love it

[00:06:28] Yeah I love it

[00:06:29] Remember when he's in the

[00:06:31] Witness

[00:06:33] Protection

[00:06:33] Protection program

[00:06:34] And he meets all the other guys

[00:06:35] That are in there

[00:06:36] Yeah

[00:06:37] And he's like

[00:06:37] There's enough of us

[00:06:38] To have a crime spree

[00:06:40] So it was one of those

[00:06:41] Kind of things

[00:06:42] Going to comic book conventions

[00:06:44] Seeing a lot of brown faces

[00:06:45] Like all the time

[00:06:46] All the time

[00:06:46] All the time

[00:06:47] Like there's enough of us

[00:06:49] Not for a crime

[00:06:49] There's enough of us

[00:06:50] For our own convention

[00:06:51] And it's

[00:06:52] Like just across the board

[00:06:54] And so honestly

[00:06:55] And I gotta give a lot of credit

[00:06:56] To

[00:06:57] To this man right here

[00:07:00] Freddy Lopez

[00:07:02] I also have to get a lot of credit

[00:07:03] To Freddy Lopez

[00:07:04] Yes

[00:07:04] So

[00:07:05] When it was just

[00:07:06] A seedling idea

[00:07:08] When nobody

[00:07:09] Kind of gave me the

[00:07:12] Time of day for it

[00:07:13] I told him

[00:07:13] I was like

[00:07:14] Hey

[00:07:14] I have this idea

[00:07:15] For this comic book convention

[00:07:17] And he's like

[00:07:18] You know what

[00:07:19] That's a great idea

[00:07:20] Here

[00:07:21] Let me

[00:07:21] And I saw his stuff

[00:07:23] And I thought it was a great thing

[00:07:24] It was like

[00:07:24] Alamo City Comic Con

[00:07:25] Or something like that

[00:07:26] And I was like

[00:07:27] And he goes

[00:07:28] That's a great idea

[00:07:29] And he gave me this

[00:07:30] He was like

[00:07:31] Here

[00:07:31] Take this

[00:07:32] As like

[00:07:32] You know

[00:07:33] Just something to

[00:07:33] To kind of keep it going

[00:07:35] And stuff

[00:07:35] And I was like

[00:07:36] I mean

[00:07:36] I don't have anything

[00:07:37] Going on

[00:07:38] Like

[00:07:38] This is just an idea

[00:07:40] I pick up trash

[00:07:41] At a cultural center

[00:07:42] Right now

[00:07:44] But I want to try to

[00:07:45] You know

[00:07:46] Make this a thing

[00:07:47] He's like

[00:07:48] Count me in

[00:07:48] I'm one of your first people

[00:07:50] So

[00:07:52] Fast forward two years

[00:07:53] Of like

[00:07:53] Telling people about it

[00:07:55] And nobody understanding

[00:07:56] Back then

[00:07:56] Kind of what that's about

[00:07:57] Like I don't understand

[00:07:58] So you're going to have

[00:08:00] Mexicans and comic books

[00:08:01] I don't understand

[00:08:02] Where those two things meet

[00:08:04] So I might as well

[00:08:05] Have been like

[00:08:06] You know

[00:08:06] Peanut butter and bananas

[00:08:07] To people that never

[00:08:08] Eaten that sandwich

[00:08:09] Because they didn't

[00:08:10] Understand it

[00:08:11] So I just kept asking

[00:08:11] The people with

[00:08:13] The money

[00:08:14] And then the access

[00:08:14] To really

[00:08:16] A place to have it

[00:08:18] And

[00:08:19] And I

[00:08:20] And then

[00:08:20] You know

[00:08:21] Finally it just happened

[00:08:22] I went over there

[00:08:23] To Texas Latino Comic Con

[00:08:24] I mean

[00:08:25] It was just after years

[00:08:26] Of letting people know

[00:08:27] And people not understanding

[00:08:28] And then I saw that

[00:08:29] You know

[00:08:30] You're all over

[00:08:31] There in Dallas

[00:08:32] Had the same

[00:08:33] Kind of like

[00:08:34] You know

[00:08:34] Parallel thinking

[00:08:35] And it was weird

[00:08:36] Because we do it

[00:08:37] At the MAC

[00:08:37] They do it

[00:08:38] At the LAC

[00:08:38] And I was like

[00:08:39] Wow

[00:08:41] Let's

[00:08:41] You know

[00:08:41] Let's make this happen

[00:08:42] So

[00:08:43] You know

[00:08:43] People get it done man

[00:08:45] That's it for real

[00:08:46] You know what

[00:08:47] I love that you say

[00:08:48] That people didn't get it

[00:08:48] Because

[00:08:49] The first time I went

[00:08:50] Which was

[00:08:51] I don't know

[00:08:52] At this point

[00:08:53] Six, seven years

[00:08:54] I don't know

[00:08:55] Whenever it was

[00:08:55] First time I went

[00:08:57] I invited

[00:08:58] Some of my

[00:08:59] Anglo friends to go

[00:09:00] And they were like

[00:09:00] Oh we don't want to

[00:09:01] Encroach on your space

[00:09:02] This is for Latinos

[00:09:03] And I was like

[00:09:03] We want your money

[00:09:05] Yeah

[00:09:05] No for real

[00:09:06] Come buy things

[00:09:07] Yeah

[00:09:08] So the idea

[00:09:08] Of people not getting it

[00:09:10] At first

[00:09:10] I get that

[00:09:11] You know

[00:09:11] And it's like

[00:09:12] Once they kind of

[00:09:13] Wrap their head around

[00:09:13] Like oh wait a minute

[00:09:14] It's just a convention

[00:09:15] Like any other convention

[00:09:16] It's just that we're

[00:09:17] Focusing on people

[00:09:18] From within the community

[00:09:19] That's the idea

[00:09:20] And that's a big thing

[00:09:21] I think that's a fair

[00:09:22] No I was going to say

[00:09:23] I think that's a fair

[00:09:24] You know

[00:09:25] Comment or

[00:09:27] Situation right

[00:09:27] That we find ourselves in

[00:09:28] Because

[00:09:30] Javier always likes

[00:09:31] To equate this

[00:09:31] And he can expand on this

[00:09:32] To you know

[00:09:34] You going out

[00:09:34] To the carne asada

[00:09:35] Out of your

[00:09:35] You know

[00:09:36] Your tia's

[00:09:36] Or your family's asada

[00:09:38] Right

[00:09:38] Like

[00:09:38] But you know

[00:09:39] You get that one person

[00:09:40] Who's not used to

[00:09:42] Being invited to the outside

[00:09:42] You know

[00:09:43] They might sit back

[00:09:43] They might not be

[00:09:44] Too keen on going

[00:09:46] But

[00:09:46] That's really just

[00:09:47] Kind of the atmosphere

[00:09:48] That we try to build

[00:09:48] With Mexamerican

[00:09:49] And that's why

[00:09:50] It's just got so many

[00:09:51] Different components

[00:09:52] And just

[00:09:52] Well you know

[00:09:52] You mentioned that

[00:09:53] You wanted a connection

[00:09:55] To culture

[00:09:57] To the comunidad

[00:09:58] Like

[00:09:58] Expand on that

[00:09:59] Because

[00:09:59] We talk about it

[00:10:00] With our

[00:10:01] You know

[00:10:01] Conversations

[00:10:02] That you know

[00:10:03] Comic books

[00:10:04] You know

[00:10:04] Art

[00:10:05] Is a personal thing

[00:10:06] You know

[00:10:06] And then

[00:10:06] Seeing our faces

[00:10:07] Our voices

[00:10:08] You know

[00:10:09] The culture

[00:10:10] Right now

[00:10:10] And I think

[00:10:11] We've talked about it

[00:10:11] Before

[00:10:12] Like

[00:10:13] It's cool to be Latino

[00:10:15] Until there's too much of it

[00:10:17] You know what I mean

[00:10:17] Like

[00:10:17] Until we get too much

[00:10:19] In your face

[00:10:19] Then it's not

[00:10:20] You're pushing it

[00:10:21] Yeah

[00:10:22] But they love us enough

[00:10:24] They love us enough

[00:10:25] To buy it at H-E-B

[00:10:26] They love us enough

[00:10:27] To go

[00:10:28] You know

[00:10:28] We talked about last time

[00:10:29] The

[00:10:30] The white gaze

[00:10:32] You know

[00:10:32] But

[00:10:33] I want to expand on that

[00:10:35] For a second though

[00:10:35] Because I think about

[00:10:37] I made this comparison

[00:10:37] On the show before

[00:10:39] Ant-Man has like

[00:10:40] One Latino character in it

[00:10:41] And everybody loves it

[00:10:42] But then when

[00:10:43] Blue Beetle was gonna be like

[00:10:44] We're all Latino characters

[00:10:45] People were like

[00:10:45] Oh that's just

[00:10:46] That's a bit too much

[00:10:47] Too much

[00:10:47] It's too brown

[00:10:50] I mean

[00:10:50] You know

[00:10:51] So I'll ask you

[00:10:51] You know

[00:10:52] Why was this

[00:10:52] Like this jump off

[00:10:53] To where you're like

[00:10:54] I want to get back

[00:10:55] Into the culture

[00:10:56] I want to get back

[00:10:56] Into the culture

[00:10:56] Like

[00:10:57] How did comic books

[00:10:58] And I mean

[00:10:59] Have you been

[00:11:00] A comic book fan

[00:11:01] Or what

[00:11:01] Pulled you into

[00:11:02] The comic book space

[00:11:03] Have you both

[00:11:04] Always been fans of that

[00:11:05] Yeah I mean

[00:11:06] I never really

[00:11:07] I grew up

[00:11:08] In the country

[00:11:09] Didn't really come

[00:11:10] Into you know

[00:11:11] Town very often

[00:11:12] And had limited resources

[00:11:13] Growing up

[00:11:14] So comic books

[00:11:15] Was really never

[00:11:16] Anything that

[00:11:17] I was generally

[00:11:17] Exposed to

[00:11:18] Other than

[00:11:18] Whenever my

[00:11:19] You know

[00:11:19] Cousins or friends

[00:11:20] Might have one

[00:11:21] Here or there

[00:11:22] Obviously

[00:11:23] Never really

[00:11:23] I never saw

[00:11:24] Myself in those

[00:11:25] Comic books

[00:11:26] Represented as much

[00:11:27] As you know

[00:11:28] We're trying to do

[00:11:29] And present now

[00:11:31] But yeah I mean

[00:11:32] Outside of that

[00:11:34] My father was always

[00:11:35] Big on about

[00:11:36] You know

[00:11:36] Culture and

[00:11:38] You know

[00:11:38] Just cultural pride

[00:11:39] And things

[00:11:40] And so I always

[00:11:40] Found that

[00:11:41] From my dad

[00:11:43] And from there

[00:11:44] I mean I went

[00:11:45] To a school

[00:11:45] That was

[00:11:47] Growing up

[00:11:47] You know

[00:11:48] Elementary

[00:11:48] Middle school

[00:11:49] High school

[00:11:49] You know

[00:11:50] It was

[00:11:50] Predominantly white

[00:11:52] School

[00:11:53] And you know

[00:11:53] Just really

[00:11:54] Didn't see myself

[00:11:55] You know

[00:11:56] Represented

[00:11:56] Or really out there

[00:11:58] So I found myself

[00:11:59] Gravitating to

[00:12:00] You know

[00:12:00] Stories of

[00:12:01] You know

[00:12:01] Mexican Revolution

[00:12:02] Pancho Villa

[00:12:03] Mediano Zapata

[00:12:04] And things of that nature

[00:12:06] So that was always

[00:12:07] Something that

[00:12:07] You know

[00:12:08] Really dug into

[00:12:09] And enjoyed

[00:12:10] Found my way

[00:12:11] Into college

[00:12:11] Ended up

[00:12:12] As a Mexican

[00:12:13] American Studies

[00:12:13] Major

[00:12:15] And really just

[00:12:16] You know

[00:12:16] Enjoyed that

[00:12:18] Was able to

[00:12:19] See myself

[00:12:21] Was able to

[00:12:21] Hear stories

[00:12:22] That you know

[00:12:22] You don't hear

[00:12:23] In mainstream

[00:12:24] Media

[00:12:25] Mainstream

[00:12:26] History

[00:12:26] Anything

[00:12:27] Of that sort

[00:12:29] Anything that

[00:12:30] We are

[00:12:30] Represented

[00:12:30] By in the

[00:12:31] Textbooks

[00:12:32] These days

[00:12:33] Is by now

[00:12:34] Already halfway

[00:12:35] Removed

[00:12:35] Or if not

[00:12:36] More than

[00:12:36] That

[00:12:38] So you know

[00:12:39] It's just

[00:12:39] Frustrating

[00:12:41] And eventually

[00:12:41] I found myself

[00:12:42] Working at a

[00:12:43] Cultural center

[00:12:43] With Javier

[00:12:45] Did that for

[00:12:46] About six years

[00:12:47] And left there

[00:12:49] To a different

[00:12:49] Job

[00:12:50] And then that

[00:12:51] Was kind of

[00:12:51] Around the time

[00:12:52] That Javier

[00:12:52] Called me

[00:12:53] And you know

[00:12:54] I was just

[00:12:55] Ready to get

[00:12:56] Back into it

[00:12:56] Ready to

[00:12:57] You know

[00:12:58] Do my part

[00:12:58] I'm an artist

[00:13:00] By no means

[00:13:01] Can't draw a

[00:13:02] Straight line

[00:13:03] So

[00:13:04] Right here man

[00:13:04] You know

[00:13:04] I'll find myself

[00:13:05] Being more of

[00:13:06] An administrator

[00:13:08] And just doing

[00:13:09] What I can

[00:13:10] In my time

[00:13:11] At the cultural

[00:13:11] Center

[00:13:11] It was all about

[00:13:12] Being a key

[00:13:13] Holder

[00:13:13] And trying to

[00:13:14] Open you know

[00:13:14] Doors

[00:13:15] Or give advice

[00:13:16] And you know

[00:13:16] Just trying to

[00:13:17] Provide more

[00:13:17] Access

[00:13:18] I love that

[00:13:19] Image man

[00:13:19] Of the key

[00:13:20] Holder

[00:13:20] Like you know

[00:13:21] Like you said

[00:13:24] We talk about

[00:13:24] Gatekeeping and

[00:13:25] Things like that

[00:13:25] And opening doors

[00:13:26] And it's such

[00:13:27] A symbolic deal

[00:13:28] But then let's

[00:13:29] Be real

[00:13:29] You fucking

[00:13:30] Open and close

[00:13:30] The building

[00:13:31] Too you know

[00:13:31] What I mean

[00:13:32] Like we

[00:13:33] You know

[00:13:33] We grew up

[00:13:33] With that

[00:13:34] Like hey

[00:13:34] Yeah

[00:13:34] We trust you

[00:13:35] With the

[00:13:35] Building

[00:13:36] You know

[00:13:37] And like

[00:13:39] That image

[00:13:40] Of the key

[00:13:40] Holder

[00:13:41] You know

[00:13:42] Rick Moranis

[00:13:42] Somehow got back

[00:13:43] Into my brain

[00:13:44] But

[00:13:44] Because of

[00:13:45] My blue heaven

[00:13:46] There we go

[00:13:47] Ghostbusters

[00:13:47] We're back

[00:13:48] We're back

[00:13:48] We're back

[00:13:49] It's an 80s thing

[00:13:50] You just gotta

[00:13:50] Go with it

[00:13:51] It's an 80s thing

[00:13:51] You just gotta go with it

[00:13:52] But what I'm getting at

[00:13:53] Is it's a beautiful

[00:13:55] Symbolism there

[00:13:55] That's that image

[00:13:56] Of the key holder

[00:13:56] I say opening doors

[00:13:57] That's what you're doing

[00:13:59] Man

[00:13:59] You're not an artist

[00:14:00] But facilitating

[00:14:01] The fact that

[00:14:01] You can

[00:14:02] You can connect

[00:14:03] The culture

[00:14:04] With the art

[00:14:05] With the

[00:14:06] With the

[00:14:06] Creation

[00:14:07] With the creators

[00:14:08] You know

[00:14:08] Elia has a table there

[00:14:09] Most of the times

[00:14:10] Right

[00:14:10] And that

[00:14:12] She can express her

[00:14:13] Yeah

[00:14:14] Please expand

[00:14:14] You know

[00:14:15] Yeah

[00:14:15] No

[00:14:15] Like I've been

[00:14:16] Doing this show

[00:14:17] I don't even remember

[00:14:19] The first year

[00:14:19] I did the show

[00:14:20] But I

[00:14:20] I'm so happy

[00:14:22] That y'all reached out

[00:14:23] The year y'all did

[00:14:25] And I was able to do it

[00:14:27] It's

[00:14:28] It's more than just

[00:14:29] An event

[00:14:30] For me

[00:14:31] Because there's something

[00:14:32] About events

[00:14:32] That connect

[00:14:33] With la cultura

[00:14:34] And I can showcase myself

[00:14:37] Not just as another artist

[00:14:38] But as a Latina

[00:14:39] Like I'm a Latina

[00:14:40] That's doing this

[00:14:41] And to be able to

[00:14:43] Meet other artists

[00:14:44] Other comic artists

[00:14:45] Other creators

[00:14:45] Other creatives

[00:14:47] That are also

[00:14:49] Latine

[00:14:49] And have works to show

[00:14:51] It's been the best

[00:14:52] Like

[00:14:53] Kind of like

[00:14:54] Welcoming

[00:14:55] Into the community

[00:14:56] On the creative side

[00:14:58] Of the Latina space

[00:14:59] I've met so many

[00:15:01] Great people

[00:15:01] Like

[00:15:02] It's not just a show

[00:15:03] It's like

[00:15:04] It's like a reunion

[00:15:05] It's like a family reunion

[00:15:06] With a bunch of creatives

[00:15:08] And meeting new

[00:15:09] New creatives each year

[00:15:10] That I get to follow

[00:15:11] And it just always

[00:15:13] Blows my mind

[00:15:14] Like

[00:15:16] How

[00:15:17] Talented we all are

[00:15:18] You know

[00:15:19] Like everyone's amazing

[00:15:20] And I'm so glad

[00:15:22] That's the best way of putting it

[00:15:22] Yeah

[00:15:23] You know

[00:15:23] It's like

[00:15:25] Amazing people

[00:15:26] Showcasing their work

[00:15:27] And I'm honored

[00:15:28] To just be able

[00:15:29] To bask in it

[00:15:31] We're honored

[00:15:32] That you chose to come

[00:15:33] And you know

[00:15:34] Take a chance with us

[00:15:35] That first year

[00:15:36] And then

[00:15:37] Still keep coming

[00:15:38] And showcasing

[00:15:39] And I mean

[00:15:40] Like Nino said

[00:15:42] We're just administrators

[00:15:43] So we don't

[00:15:44] We're not here

[00:15:44] To try and

[00:15:45] You know

[00:15:45] Do a backdoor

[00:15:46] Backdoor sell your

[00:15:47] Herbalife

[00:15:47] Or nothing like that

[00:15:48] We're just here

[00:15:49] To showcase y'all

[00:15:50] And that's really it

[00:15:51] I'm in the market by the way

[00:15:51] Put together

[00:15:52] The convention

[00:15:53] Go ahead

[00:15:55] About Herbalife

[00:15:55] Yeah

[00:15:55] We need some Herbalife

[00:15:56] We need some Herbalife

[00:15:57] Oh sorry

[00:15:58] I need sponsors

[00:15:58] Oh okay

[00:15:59] It's a great product

[00:16:01] Hey you know what

[00:16:01] Herbalife

[00:16:03] But I was going to ask you

[00:16:04] Javi like

[00:16:04] You know like

[00:16:05] Did you ever

[00:16:06] Like what was the vision

[00:16:07] When you talked

[00:16:08] We talked to Nino

[00:16:09] Or you know

[00:16:10] Freddy Lopez

[00:16:10] And everybody

[00:16:11] Hey this is my vibe

[00:16:12] This is my idea

[00:16:13] You know like

[00:16:13] But what finally said

[00:16:15] Like put you over

[00:16:16] Was it

[00:16:17] I mean like

[00:16:18] Finally made it happen

[00:16:20] One word

[00:16:21] Ignorance

[00:16:22] Nino said it best

[00:16:24] When we did that

[00:16:26] That statesman interview

[00:16:27] They were asking

[00:16:28] You know

[00:16:28] What made you think

[00:16:29] That you could do this

[00:16:31] And you know

[00:16:31] Nino

[00:16:33] He said

[00:16:34] I think Javi was

[00:16:34] Pretty ignorant

[00:16:35] As to what

[00:16:36] He could

[00:16:36] He could do

[00:16:37] And not do

[00:16:38] And that was really it

[00:16:39] I mean

[00:16:40] It was just

[00:16:41] Hey

[00:16:41] Just like a band-aid

[00:16:43] I didn't

[00:16:44] I

[00:16:45] You have to pay

[00:16:46] For a lot of stuff

[00:16:46] I mean you know

[00:16:47] Y'all have your

[00:16:48] Passion projects

[00:16:48] It's not gonna

[00:16:49] Make you any money

[00:16:50] So that's the first thing

[00:16:51] That you gotta get

[00:16:51] Out of your head

[00:16:53] You were going

[00:16:54] To lose money

[00:16:55] But you were gonna

[00:16:56] Gain so much more

[00:16:57] From just

[00:16:59] You know

[00:17:00] Emotionally

[00:17:01] And just

[00:17:01] Spiritually

[00:17:02] And all that stuff

[00:17:03] That

[00:17:03] That offsets it

[00:17:05] A thousand million percent

[00:17:06] Whatever it is

[00:17:07] So

[00:17:08] Yeah

[00:17:08] Just at one point

[00:17:09] You just kind of

[00:17:10] Just take that step

[00:17:11] Off that ledge

[00:17:12] Make that first call

[00:17:13] And when that first person

[00:17:14] Says yeah I'm down

[00:17:15] Do not let that

[00:17:16] First person down

[00:17:17] Do not let that

[00:17:18] Second person down

[00:17:19] That third person down

[00:17:20] You don't wanna have

[00:17:20] A fire fest

[00:17:21] Right

[00:17:21] So you wanna make sure

[00:17:22] That everybody's

[00:17:24] Going

[00:17:24] Everybody's taken care of

[00:17:25] What's that

[00:17:26] Unless you want

[00:17:27] A documentary made

[00:17:28] Then totally have

[00:17:29] That fire fest

[00:17:30] Yeah

[00:17:30] I called Ja Rule

[00:17:31] But he was not down

[00:17:32] For another

[00:17:33] It would be called

[00:17:33] Mexa Marino

[00:17:35] We don't want that

[00:17:36] We don't want

[00:17:37] Mexa Marino

[00:17:38] We don't want that

[00:17:39] We don't want that

[00:17:41] We don't want the

[00:17:41] Yeah

[00:17:44] So I mean

[00:17:45] That's really it

[00:17:45] You know

[00:17:45] And to

[00:17:46] Mino's point

[00:17:48] And to Kevin's point

[00:17:49] It's like

[00:17:50] It's not just about

[00:17:51] You know

[00:17:51] And you're asking about

[00:17:52] Like the theme

[00:17:53] And things like that

[00:17:54] We start off our event

[00:17:56] With like

[00:17:57] An artist circle

[00:17:58] To kind of

[00:17:59] You know

[00:17:59] Introduce everybody

[00:18:00] Get that

[00:18:01] You know

[00:18:01] That going

[00:18:02] That's true

[00:18:03] I love that

[00:18:04] It's so funny

[00:18:05] That actually

[00:18:05] Was an idea

[00:18:06] That

[00:18:06] Go ahead

[00:18:07] It creates like

[00:18:08] A little mini community

[00:18:09] Within the community

[00:18:10] And I love it

[00:18:11] Yeah

[00:18:12] You know

[00:18:12] That's not my idea

[00:18:14] That actually

[00:18:15] In

[00:18:15] Teatro Campesino

[00:18:17] Luis Valdez

[00:18:18] Who did

[00:18:18] La Bamba

[00:18:20] He had a theater camp

[00:18:21] And that's what they did

[00:18:23] Every

[00:18:23] You know

[00:18:24] In the beginning

[00:18:24] Of that theater camp

[00:18:25] So

[00:18:26] All his kids

[00:18:27] His family

[00:18:28] His family

[00:18:28] Kind of ran it

[00:18:29] It was a cool

[00:18:30] Little experience

[00:18:31] But anyway

[00:18:32] I always loved that

[00:18:33] That was a fantastic

[00:18:34] Experience

[00:18:35] So

[00:18:37] I

[00:18:37] I don't know

[00:18:38] Every time

[00:18:39] One of us

[00:18:40] Has an idea

[00:18:40] Like for instance

[00:18:41] To wear this hat

[00:18:42] I'm like

[00:18:43] Man is that going to be

[00:18:43] Really dumb

[00:18:44] Or

[00:18:44] Kind of dumb

[00:18:46] You know

[00:18:46] Dude I'm

[00:18:46] I'm digging the vibe

[00:18:48] Like I'm like

[00:18:48] Like

[00:18:51] Hat wear

[00:18:52] Hat wear

[00:18:53] Thank you

[00:18:54] So

[00:18:55] Sunglasses inside

[00:18:56] That's the vibe

[00:18:57] I can dig

[00:18:57] Sunglasses inside

[00:18:58] It's a very

[00:18:59] Pitbull vibe

[00:19:00] Future so bright

[00:19:01] You know

[00:19:03] That's kind of

[00:19:04] What we're looking at

[00:19:05] Right there

[00:19:05] You know what I mean

[00:19:07] But I'm just glad

[00:19:08] That it was

[00:19:08] That you know

[00:19:09] That it's so well received

[00:19:11] That you know

[00:19:12] We want to create

[00:19:12] That community

[00:19:13] And I'm glad

[00:19:13] That we're on

[00:19:14] My Primo's podcast

[00:19:15] Because that's how

[00:19:16] We ultimately see everybody

[00:19:18] Is a primo

[00:19:19] Prima

[00:19:19] Prima

[00:19:20] Is like

[00:19:21] You know

[00:19:21] Everybody has a little bit

[00:19:22] Of different

[00:19:23] Differing opinions

[00:19:24] Different views

[00:19:25] On things

[00:19:26] But ultimately

[00:19:27] You know

[00:19:27] We all grew up

[00:19:28] In your grandma's house

[00:19:29] We all grew up

[00:19:30] In the same kind of way

[00:19:31] And you might have

[00:19:32] A primo that

[00:19:33] Went to prison

[00:19:34] And you might have

[00:19:35] A primo that's a cop

[00:19:35] And everybody comes together

[00:19:37] And you're all eating

[00:19:38] That same

[00:19:39] We still get along

[00:19:40] Pozole

[00:19:40] That everybody ate

[00:19:41] And all that stuff

[00:19:42] So that's kind of

[00:19:43] What we want

[00:19:43] Is like

[00:19:44] Everybody

[00:19:44] Yeah

[00:19:45] Is that everybody

[00:19:46] Kind of just get together

[00:19:47] It's like a backyard

[00:19:48] Barbecue

[00:19:49] Or whatever it is

[00:19:50] Y'all

[00:19:50] You know

[00:19:51] Concentrate on the positive

[00:19:53] And hopefully make connections

[00:19:54] And everybody

[00:19:55] Kind of goes off from there

[00:19:56] And does their own thing

[00:19:57] And just have like

[00:19:58] You know

[00:19:59] Six hours of just peace

[00:20:01] And a good time

[00:20:02] So that's really it

[00:20:03] I love that you said

[00:20:04] Everybody

[00:20:05] And you bring everybody in

[00:20:06] And you say

[00:20:07] Everybody's a primo

[00:20:07] And the thing is

[00:20:11] Like you know

[00:20:12] We're in Texas

[00:20:12] The majority of Latinos

[00:20:14] And Latinas here

[00:20:15] Are Mexican-American origin

[00:20:17] But literally

[00:20:19] Everybody's invited

[00:20:19] It's a nice pun

[00:20:21] Like I said

[00:20:21] It works for the pun

[00:20:23] Really well

[00:20:24] But like

[00:20:25] I've actually had people say

[00:20:26] Well you know

[00:20:27] We're Colombian

[00:20:28] Or whatever

[00:20:29] Is that like

[00:20:29] No no

[00:20:29] You're invited too

[00:20:30] Everybody's invited

[00:20:31] You know

[00:20:32] It's just for the title

[00:20:33] And it's a good title

[00:20:35] But like

[00:20:36] Everybody's family

[00:20:37] I mean

[00:20:38] We can't just talk about

[00:20:39] Rucha Khan

[00:20:39] You know

[00:20:40] I mean

[00:20:40] That could happen

[00:20:40] Down the line

[00:20:41] I don't know

[00:20:41] I'm not promising anything

[00:20:43] But

[00:20:44] Let us know

[00:20:44] Let us know

[00:20:46] It may happen

[00:20:48] Otra fiesta

[00:20:49] We have pupusas

[00:20:49] Instead of tacos

[00:20:50] It'll be great

[00:20:51] Yeah

[00:20:52] In support of

[00:20:52] Salvadorian brothers

[00:20:53] Yeah

[00:20:53] You know

[00:20:55] Our

[00:20:55] It's pretty savvy right now

[00:20:56] Too

[00:20:57] So you know

[00:20:57] Bitcoin land

[00:20:58] And

[00:20:59] Surf city

[00:21:00] Whatever

[00:21:01] I say this

[00:21:02] Because

[00:21:02] There's some nefarious shit

[00:21:04] Under the sands

[00:21:05] In El Salvador

[00:21:05] And trust me

[00:21:06] I got opinions

[00:21:07] But that'll be for

[00:21:07] A different show

[00:21:10] Well

[00:21:12] I'm excited

[00:21:12] Because I got to

[00:21:13] You know

[00:21:14] Collaborate with you all

[00:21:15] A few years back

[00:21:15] I think I first met

[00:21:16] Kevin there as well

[00:21:17] When we were doing

[00:21:18] Things during

[00:21:19] During COVID

[00:21:20] You know

[00:21:21] Yeah

[00:21:21] That's right

[00:21:22] I was hosting

[00:21:23] The online

[00:21:24] I think I was hosting

[00:21:25] The online convention

[00:21:26] Because I did that

[00:21:27] For you guys

[00:21:28] And for another convention

[00:21:28] As well

[00:21:29] Which made me feel

[00:21:30] Really special

[00:21:30] As even though

[00:21:31] I know nothing

[00:21:32] About technology

[00:21:32] But I was hosting

[00:21:33] A lot of the pandemic ones

[00:21:35] Can I just say too

[00:21:36] Real quick

[00:21:37] That how

[00:21:37] Grateful we are to Kevin

[00:21:39] And I don't want to

[00:21:40] Like gloss over that

[00:21:41] Because Kevin

[00:21:42] Had been like

[00:21:43] Such an early supporter

[00:21:44] Of us

[00:21:45] And had been

[00:21:47] Just so great

[00:21:48] With everything

[00:21:48] That he does

[00:21:49] Getting

[00:21:50] You know

[00:21:50] All of his research

[00:21:51] All of his knowledge

[00:21:51] Like there's no way

[00:21:52] That I could even touch that

[00:21:53] Like I like comic books

[00:21:55] But when I met Kevin

[00:21:56] I'm like

[00:21:56] I don't like comic books

[00:21:58] There's no way

[00:21:59] That I can

[00:21:59] Zell is opening

[00:22:01] He sent

[00:22:01] You know

[00:22:02] He sent you some cash

[00:22:03] Zavi

[00:22:04] I see that

[00:22:04] You sharing the screen

[00:22:05] There was a need

[00:22:07] There was a need

[00:22:08] There was a thing

[00:22:08] That was missing

[00:22:09] That needed

[00:22:10] To have something

[00:22:11] Inside of it

[00:22:12] And I just said

[00:22:13] That had to be me

[00:22:14] Own it man

[00:22:15] That had to be

[00:22:16] You own it

[00:22:17] Fill that

[00:22:17] Finally

[00:22:19] Acceptance

[00:22:20] Acceptance

[00:22:20] He's been doing it

[00:22:21] For a while

[00:22:21] I never denied it

[00:22:22] I'll be honest

[00:22:23] Yeah

[00:22:24] So thank you very much

[00:22:26] Merch coming soon

[00:22:27] Everybody

[00:22:28] There you go

[00:22:29] T-shirt coming soon

[00:22:30] Can't wait man

[00:22:31] Can't wait

[00:22:32] Kevin feels

[00:22:33] A hole

[00:22:34] He does

[00:22:34] Definitely

[00:22:35] He feels a hole

[00:22:36] But I bring up

[00:22:37] COVID because

[00:22:38] Obviously you know

[00:22:39] Getting

[00:22:40] Not only is it hard

[00:22:41] To get a convention

[00:22:42] Off the ground

[00:22:42] Obviously

[00:22:43] And then

[00:22:44] How many years

[00:22:44] Running were you guys

[00:22:45] Into Mixamerican

[00:22:46] When COVID hit

[00:22:47] And you had to

[00:22:48] Make a change

[00:22:49] That would have been

[00:22:50] That was the third year

[00:22:51] Started in 18

[00:22:52] 19

[00:22:52] And then

[00:22:53] 2020 we presented

[00:22:54] Online

[00:22:56] I mean

[00:22:57] What was that like

[00:22:59] I mean

[00:22:59] It was tough

[00:23:00] I mean

[00:23:01] Through the discussions

[00:23:01] We had

[00:23:02] We just didn't want

[00:23:03] To lose our presence

[00:23:05] Presence out there

[00:23:06] And you know

[00:23:07] Presenting the con

[00:23:07] We wanted to keep

[00:23:08] That longevity

[00:23:09] And just be consistent

[00:23:10] And being able

[00:23:11] To offer

[00:23:13] You know

[00:23:13] The connection

[00:23:14] To the community

[00:23:14] And the creators

[00:23:16] But it was also

[00:23:17] A great opportunity

[00:23:17] For us to be able

[00:23:18] To connect with

[00:23:19] A lot of people

[00:23:19] From out of town

[00:23:20] Out of state

[00:23:21] So that was

[00:23:22] A great opportunity

[00:23:24] We had people

[00:23:24] Out of California

[00:23:26] Washington State

[00:23:28] We had one of our

[00:23:29] Percenters

[00:23:29] Was from Brazil

[00:23:31] That Kevin

[00:23:32] Connected us with

[00:23:33] So it was

[00:23:33] Just a great opportunity

[00:23:34] And it allowed us

[00:23:36] To do a lot

[00:23:36] Of different things

[00:23:37] To

[00:23:38] We were able

[00:23:39] To feature

[00:23:40] A little bit more

[00:23:40] On the

[00:23:42] Animation

[00:23:42] With

[00:23:44] Robert Gonzalez

[00:23:45] Out of San Antonio

[00:23:46] Yeah

[00:23:46] That was awesome

[00:23:48] To be able

[00:23:49] To connect with him

[00:23:50] You know

[00:23:51] I like that you said

[00:23:52] That about

[00:23:53] Bringing people

[00:23:54] Together as well

[00:23:54] Because aside from

[00:23:55] Just getting the

[00:23:56] Community out there

[00:23:57] And then making

[00:23:57] That little community

[00:23:58] With like the circle

[00:23:58] Before and everything else

[00:23:59] One thing I love

[00:24:00] About these kind of events

[00:24:01] Is creators

[00:24:02] Get to meet creators

[00:24:03] Yes

[00:24:04] Like you get to

[00:24:05] Like I said

[00:24:06] Met Freddie

[00:24:07] In fact Ellie

[00:24:08] I'm pretty sure

[00:24:09] I met you

[00:24:09] At one of these events

[00:24:10] I think so

[00:24:11] Yeah

[00:24:11] So like yeah

[00:24:12] Everybody meets people

[00:24:14] Here

[00:24:14] Both the

[00:24:16] Audience

[00:24:17] And the creators

[00:24:18] Themselves

[00:24:19] It's just

[00:24:19] It's not even

[00:24:20] Networking

[00:24:21] It's really just

[00:24:21] Meeting people

[00:24:22] And making

[00:24:23] Friends and family

[00:24:24] That's honestly

[00:24:25] One of the most

[00:24:25] Rewarding things

[00:24:26] Too about

[00:24:27] Mexamerican

[00:24:28] Like whenever

[00:24:29] Somebody connected

[00:24:30] Or you know

[00:24:31] They just became

[00:24:31] Friends

[00:24:32] Or next thing

[00:24:32] You know

[00:24:32] Somebody's working

[00:24:33] On a project

[00:24:34] Together

[00:24:34] I mean that's

[00:24:35] That's just

[00:24:36] To another level

[00:24:36] Of what we're

[00:24:37] You know

[00:24:37] Looking to

[00:24:38] To have

[00:24:39] And to see

[00:24:40] Done

[00:24:41] Heck yeah

[00:24:42] Yeah like I

[00:24:43] Have a whole

[00:24:43] Base in Austin

[00:24:44] Now that like

[00:24:46] Keeps up with

[00:24:46] My stuff

[00:24:47] And it feels

[00:24:47] Cool

[00:24:47] It's like

[00:24:48] Oh I'm not

[00:24:49] Just in Dallas

[00:24:49] Now

[00:24:50] People in Austin

[00:24:51] Like me

[00:24:52] Yeah

[00:24:52] I mean

[00:24:53] The reason I bring

[00:24:54] Up COVID is

[00:24:54] Because I think

[00:24:55] That's the first

[00:24:55] Time we worked

[00:24:56] Together

[00:24:56] And I was

[00:24:57] You know

[00:24:57] We did our

[00:24:58] Process there

[00:24:59] And we had a

[00:24:59] Blast

[00:25:00] And then

[00:25:00] That vibe

[00:25:01] Just kept

[00:25:01] Running man

[00:25:02] Like after that

[00:25:03] We finally

[00:25:03] Were back in

[00:25:04] Person

[00:25:04] You know

[00:25:05] And I love

[00:25:06] How it just

[00:25:06] Came back

[00:25:07] Full force

[00:25:07] Right

[00:25:08] And not only

[00:25:08] That but

[00:25:09] The fact that

[00:25:09] It feels like

[00:25:10] It's just

[00:25:12] Getting to be

[00:25:12] A bigger

[00:25:13] Bigger party

[00:25:13] You know

[00:25:14] We're celebrating

[00:25:15] That right

[00:25:16] This is

[00:25:17] Now year

[00:25:18] What nine

[00:25:18] Am I

[00:25:20] Ten

[00:25:21] Seven

[00:25:21] Seven

[00:25:22] It's issue

[00:25:23] Seven

[00:25:23] It says on

[00:25:24] The poster

[00:25:25] Issue

[00:25:25] Seven

[00:25:26] Seven

[00:25:26] Seven

[00:25:27] Seven

[00:25:27] Seven

[00:25:28] Which by the way

[00:25:29] That threw me

[00:25:30] Off and I'm not

[00:25:30] Going to lie

[00:25:31] Even though

[00:25:31] I'm you know

[00:25:32] I'm all into

[00:25:32] Comic books and

[00:25:33] Stuff I saw

[00:25:33] Issue seven

[00:25:34] I was like

[00:25:34] I wonder why

[00:25:34] I said seven

[00:25:35] Are they referencing

[00:25:35] I'm like

[00:25:36] Wait

[00:25:36] It's because

[00:25:37] It's year seven

[00:25:40] What do we have

[00:25:41] To look forward

[00:25:42] To this year

[00:25:43] Like let's talk

[00:25:44] About this year's

[00:25:45] Event

[00:25:45] Which is of course

[00:25:46] Happening November

[00:25:47] November 2nd

[00:25:49] Mexamerican

[00:25:49] Tell us about

[00:25:50] You know

[00:25:51] Where is it

[00:25:52] Going to be

[00:25:52] Held

[00:25:52] And what

[00:25:53] Can we look

[00:25:53] Forward to

[00:25:54] What can

[00:25:54] People look

[00:25:55] Forward to

[00:25:55] At Mexamerican

[00:25:58] Yeah I'll go

[00:25:59] So we're

[00:26:00] Having it at

[00:26:01] The

[00:26:01] Again we're

[00:26:02] Having it at

[00:26:02] The Panamerican

[00:26:03] So the

[00:26:03] We usually

[00:26:04] Have it with

[00:26:05] Our partners

[00:26:05] The city

[00:26:06] Of Austin

[00:26:06] Mexican

[00:26:07] American

[00:26:07] Cultural

[00:26:07] Center

[00:26:08] Right now

[00:26:09] They're doing

[00:26:09] Some renovations

[00:26:10] For a couple

[00:26:11] Years

[00:26:11] So in that

[00:26:12] Time

[00:26:12] We're at

[00:26:13] The Panamerican

[00:26:15] Park

[00:26:16] Hillside

[00:26:16] Theater

[00:26:17] So we're

[00:26:18] Going to

[00:26:18] Have it

[00:26:18] Again

[00:26:18] There

[00:26:20] This year

[00:26:21] Until the

[00:26:22] Renovations

[00:26:23] Are done

[00:26:23] I believe

[00:26:24] Next year

[00:26:25] Hopefully

[00:26:26] We can have

[00:26:26] It next year

[00:26:27] But you know

[00:26:28] How things

[00:26:28] Go with the

[00:26:29] City

[00:26:29] So let's

[00:26:29] Just

[00:26:30] You know

[00:26:30] Hopefully

[00:26:31] So this

[00:26:32] Year's

[00:26:32] Going to be

[00:26:32] Same

[00:26:33] Pretty much

[00:26:33] Same

[00:26:33] Setup

[00:26:34] But bigger

[00:26:35] How many

[00:26:36] Artists

[00:26:36] And

[00:26:37] Artists

[00:26:37] Inventors

[00:26:37] Do we

[00:26:38] Have now

[00:26:38] So this

[00:26:40] Year we're

[00:26:41] Up to

[00:26:41] About

[00:26:41] 45

[00:26:43] Comic

[00:26:43] Book

[00:26:44] Creators

[00:26:45] Artists

[00:26:45] And related

[00:26:46] Media

[00:26:46] Like zines

[00:26:47] Fan art

[00:26:49] Things of

[00:26:49] That nature

[00:26:49] And then we

[00:26:50] Have another

[00:26:50] 25 or so

[00:26:52] Artists

[00:26:52] Inventors

[00:26:53] That'll be

[00:26:54] Doing

[00:26:54] What you'll

[00:26:55] Find at

[00:26:55] Typical

[00:26:56] Art

[00:26:56] Markets

[00:26:57] Of those

[00:26:58] 44

[00:26:59] Of those

[00:26:59] 45

[00:27:00] 44

[00:27:00] Of them

[00:27:00] Are really

[00:27:01] Talented

[00:27:01] And then

[00:27:01] There's

[00:27:01] Me

[00:27:05] You're

[00:27:05] Five

[00:27:05] Of those

[00:27:06] 45

[00:27:06] That's

[00:27:06] We counted

[00:27:07] You five

[00:27:07] Times

[00:27:08] Kevin

[00:27:10] You're joking

[00:27:11] There

[00:27:11] But one

[00:27:12] Of the things

[00:27:13] That we

[00:27:13] Really

[00:27:13] Pride

[00:27:14] Are

[00:27:14] On

[00:27:14] Is a

[00:27:17] Latino is. If somebody wants to participate and they define themselves as Latino, whatever

[00:27:22] form of media or look they'd like to have, you know, we have anime people who are more anime themed.

[00:27:29] We have like, you know, I guess what you would term maybe like a classical type look. We have,

[00:27:33] you know, people who are trying new edge things, steampunk, like it's just, it's all over the place.

[00:27:38] Um, and that's by no means, you know, we're the administrators. We're there to put on that party

[00:27:43] and to make it, um, you know, be the best experience for everybody who's involved.

[00:27:48] And so like, we really enjoy that. And then the other part is, you know, we have varying levels of

[00:27:53] experience and skill level, you know, it's, it's, if you want to get out there, you know,

[00:27:58] come on, we'd like for this to be your first place to kind of take that jumping start from.

[00:28:03] You know, I like that you said that because, um, something I've talked about before is that

[00:28:07] I had a lot of trouble with my identity growing up on the border because I was

[00:28:11] not Mexican enough or not white enough or whatever. But when I came to Austin,

[00:28:15] it felt really, really welcoming. It's the first time I really felt like I was part of a community

[00:28:20] and Mexamerican was a big part of that. So that's like, I, I 100% agree with that. I love that.

[00:28:27] Yeah. Our own official motto is, uh, if you're brown, we're down, you know, it's like,

[00:28:32] yo, you know, and various levels of brownness. Um, you don't know. Yeah. So it's basically,

[00:28:37] yeah, whatever you're doing, we want you to be able to develop it. If you're starting out,

[00:28:42] we also want kids to go out there and see people that look like them that have their names to be

[00:28:48] able to say, you can do this too. Like, it's not just, you know, you have to look a certain way or

[00:28:53] tell a certain story. You don't have to do superhero stuff. I mean, you know, love and rockets was a great

[00:28:58] comic book, um, things like that. You know, you can do whatever you want to do, but, um, we just want to

[00:29:03] make sure that there's a space for that. Right. So, uh, Nino says there's a platform for you to

[00:29:07] showcase what you're doing. So that's really it. I love that. Hell yeah. No, definitely. It's great

[00:29:13] to hear that because it's exciting whenever we have, like you said, right. That when we see that,

[00:29:18] I love seeing that Kevin's the one that travels the most and Elliot does as well, but Kevin's like,

[00:29:22] when it's all over the place, but see these conventions, these gatherings of community,

[00:29:27] of comunidad, Latino, Tatenay, creatives, right. From the, from what is it all the way up there,

[00:29:32] by the panhandle or all the way down by the border, you know, like there's conventions popping up here

[00:29:36] and there, right. Gatherings that are growing and growing. So it's great to see stuff like

[00:29:39] Mexican American and Texas Latino comic-con here in Dallas. And we had, we had one in Brownsville

[00:29:44] briefly called, uh, Criarte, which I really loved. I don't, I haven't heard it from the past couple

[00:29:49] of years. I think the pandemic really had a lot of people hard. It is. Oh man.

[00:29:54] I'm out yesterday. See, that's the trouble. I'm literally, somebody was asking me the

[00:29:58] day about something happening on the border and I'm like, yeah, um, I don't hear about it as much

[00:30:01] anymore. I need, I need to connect down there some more. I need to get back about it. Criarte,

[00:30:05] I know you're listening. So, uh, bring me next time.

[00:30:08] Right. You need somebody to fill a spot for a hole? Kevin Garcia, everybody. He can take care of

[00:30:14] it for you guys. Um, you know, I think that the, the fact that we get to have these conversations

[00:30:19] and talk about the culture and still have fun, right? At the end of the day, it's fun because we all

[00:30:24] grew up, at least I did, you know, kind of beat over the head that culture means boring. Culture

[00:30:33] is history lesson in history. If it's not taught right or the right history is not taught. We

[00:30:37] don't expand to learn from it. Right. It was just a beating as another lesson, but when we can expand

[00:30:42] on it and understand that you can learn from your culture is everything from the food you eat,

[00:30:47] the songs your mom sang at the kitchen, you know, or the, the, the neighborhood guys hanging out

[00:30:52] front, just telling jokes, ragging on each other. That's culture. That's, that's our people.

[00:30:55] You know? And no matter where, as I always say it, man, I mean it, no matter where you're from,

[00:31:00] we're all primos, right? We have a connection to each other. So Mexamerican,

[00:31:03] Test Latino Comic Con, you know, all these conventions that are, that are up and down Texas

[00:31:07] and Los Angeles everywhere that have, like you said, the Browns brown space, you know,

[00:31:12] like I'm excited for that. And I get so pumped when I hear that, but we're not the one,

[00:31:16] like you say, opening those doors. We're not gatekeeping. We want everybody to come in. So

[00:31:21] November 2nd, Mexamerican, the primos are going to be there. I believe the ghost of Chikume will

[00:31:27] appear. Yeah. Okay. It will appear. We've been told. It's been prophesied.

[00:31:31] It's been prophesied. It said somebody threw some bones and some dice and

[00:31:34] Yeah. Manifested everybody. Like we burned some sage, all this stuff. So he may appear.

[00:31:39] If we clap hard enough, something like that. I don't know. Different, different medium. But

[00:31:45] having, you know, you know, I want to give you the space right here to talk to the audience. Somebody

[00:31:50] that just never been to your convention, somebody that's like curious about it, be it as a patron,

[00:31:56] be it as a creative, maybe for next season or next year. Like tell them about why they need to come

[00:32:01] to Mexamerican, like why they need to show up to support the primos like us and just to go experience

[00:32:07] the culture that you guys have worked so hard to cultivate there. Well, I think the first thing

[00:32:14] for creatives and for artists is that we don't charge is one thing for your artists. Like there's

[00:32:21] a lot, you know, something that if we can keep going with that, that's something that's a goal

[00:32:26] for our comic book artists. Cause I know that there's a lot of, we know that there's a lot of hurdles

[00:32:32] uh, financially to get your art out there. Uh, it's very expensive. You know, if you're doing print,

[00:32:38] you're doing all this stuff, there's a lot of overhead with that. And, uh, kind of again, talking

[00:32:42] about your commercial comic book conventions. Yeah. I mean, you're, it just kind of blows my mind that

[00:32:48] you got to pay them to actually have a product for them. You know, it's kind of like they're getting

[00:32:54] you two ways and then, you know, you got to make all, all your money back somehow. So anyway, we want

[00:33:00] to take that kind of paywall out of the picture so that people that, and also we're not charging our,

[00:33:07] our audience as well. So you get people that, you know, that want to go to comic cons

[00:33:11] that have never been that. So they got two different, you know, two different points that

[00:33:16] help out is like, A, you're going to see phases that look like you and B, you're not, you're not

[00:33:20] going to have to spend 25, 50 bucks just to go over there and, you know, just to see if you like it

[00:33:26] or not. Right. Come check it out, get into that space. Um, so anyway, that's one thing. Um, the

[00:33:31] other thing is just like a party. We have food over there. We got, um, you know, we got music. Um,

[00:33:36] one of our, uh, our punk rock bands, uh, outlet odyssey that we, that we, uh, partner with every

[00:33:42] year. They're, they're, uh, from El Salvador. Um, so there you go, maybe one of your next,

[00:33:48] if you, you know, check them out. They just, because of, of us, like they were kind of like

[00:33:54] in the space of not, um, they didn't have any, any, uh, Spanish music, but then after we kept

[00:34:00] having them, they wrote a Spanish song and, uh, Brian told me that he's like, Hey,

[00:34:05] cause we're here, you know, and we come here every year. We thought we'd at least have a Spanish,

[00:34:09] uh, punk rock song for you guys. So there we come. I have to go meet my own man and go,

[00:34:13] let go, go, hug it out and kind of, you know, get psyched up.

[00:34:16] Hey, that's awesome. Cool dudes. So, and Nino, anything that I'm.

[00:34:21] Yeah, no, I'll just expand on, uh, you know, the no charge thing. Uh, we want families to be able to

[00:34:26] come out, um, again, just to hit on some of those things, but it's hard to go to any of

[00:34:31] those conventions and things, especially whenever they're more commercialized and they can be more

[00:34:35] expensive. Um, a lot of those things are based on, at least from what I've seen on, you know,

[00:34:40] the special appearances, you know, get your picture, get your signature, um, things of that

[00:34:45] nature. And then, you know, the, you can still do that for the cast of my Primo's podcast.

[00:34:50] I promise you, I won't charge you. Okay. I'm there for every picture.

[00:34:54] I will.

[00:34:55] I will.

[00:34:55] The only charges for autographs.

[00:34:57] That's a good point that Nino brought up too. Cause a lot of times when you go to the comic cons,

[00:35:01] really all the, all the resources are going towards the celebrity stuff.

[00:35:04] We focus on the comic book creators, like the, our artists and creators is the focus of our event.

[00:35:11] And so everything else that we have over there, it's cool, but it's really to get everybody to see

[00:35:16] these comic book creators, the artists and, um, artists, vendors, creators, things like that.

[00:35:21] Um, so, you know, that's a good reason why we partnered with the Mac to do it during their Dia

[00:35:27] de los Muertos event. They were so kind enough to have us there. Um, so it kind of brings people

[00:35:31] that wouldn't necessarily come there for that to kind of see that. And, um, you know, that's

[00:35:36] pretty, got pretty popular commercially the other those methods. So, you know, let's use that.

[00:35:41] Let's use that and let's introduce them to some people and some artists that they normally wouldn't

[00:35:46] have. So spoonful of sugar, come on down, you know, by the way, I love that it's timed with

[00:35:52] Dia de los Muertos. Um, how that that's been, that's enabled you to get like other kind of

[00:35:58] partnerships, I guess, helping out to kind of co-promote, I guess. Right. How, how has the

[00:36:03] Dia de los Muertos become part of the event? So, um, one of our sponsors has been, uh, Lupe Arte.

[00:36:10] It's a Latinas Unidas por el Arte. Um, Mary Lou, and them have been just fantastic, um,

[00:36:16] believers in what we do. So can't thank those ladies enough. Um, but yeah, doing it, uh, during, uh,

[00:36:23] Dia de los Muertos has, has, like I said, um, just people don't expect that to, uh, to have, um,

[00:36:34] like a comic book convention there. So when they come, they're like, all right, I want to see,

[00:36:39] you know, sugar skulls. I want to see all these different things, but, um, you have people going

[00:36:44] over there and not just Latino people. Like we have a big audience and those are the people that come

[00:36:49] there for that product. So I think some of our other, um, uh, artists and I forgot who it was.

[00:36:55] It told me they're like, I've been told that they said that they do very well there because people

[00:37:01] come there for that specific product. I think it got off tangent, but, um, basically, yeah. Like

[00:37:05] people come there to, to get that. So, um, I forgot what the original question was, but, uh, basically.

[00:37:12] It still works. It still works. Yeah. It works, man. Sorry. Yeah. And you know,

[00:37:16] that, that just really worked out for us in the timing. One of the years that we were trying to

[00:37:20] do the event, um, we have a great artisan market as another part of our, um, event and the Mac was

[00:37:28] looking for some of that. And so we were able to, you know, kind of pull our things together and be

[00:37:33] able to provide not only Mexamerican, but the artisan market, things of that nature, um, which just

[00:37:38] overall leads to, um, we've always tried to build the event as again, as a big party, right? And

[00:37:45] multimedia, um, different aspects for different people. Um, so that that way we can get them

[00:37:50] there, but then we can then, you know, bring them over to the comic book creators and things of that

[00:37:56] nature. So they find themselves in places they wouldn't necessarily, you know, it's an inclusion,

[00:38:00] you know what I mean? Like let's, let's look at it from, you know, an event, an event headspace,

[00:38:05] right? Like you're including people that, like you said, if my wife isn't as a city, she's now

[00:38:11] how it has to, cause I drag her everywhere with me, but she's not the one that would go to a

[00:38:15] convention and what to read comic books and hunt down random black and white prints of tales from

[00:38:20] the crypt, you know, like, like, and, you know, shake hands with the Kevin Garcia, you know what

[00:38:25] I mean? Like, she's just like, whatever, like, let me go. But because you have the artisan market,

[00:38:30] because you have the Los Muertos, Los Altar is there, right? I've been, when I went to the Mac,

[00:38:34] I saw that, like, she felt like, wow, a connection, you know? She's a, wow, this is great. There's,

[00:38:40] there's, there's this here for that crowd that wants to see that little bit of, of, of home or the,

[00:38:46] or the past or that culture there as well. And it, it, it allows for, you know, 14 year old

[00:38:53] comic book nerd that's freaking out. That wants to go buy books and stickers to have mom and dad,

[00:38:59] you know, Hey mom, look, dad, look, this is like a sneaky way to get in. You know what I mean?

[00:39:02] Like, Hey, it's a cultural thing, but little do they know it's on both ends, man, everywhere.

[00:39:07] You know what I mean? So they're both getting, getting fed that culture. So it's awesome. I'm

[00:39:12] excited that that, that correlation is there. And then can't say it enough. November 2nd,

[00:39:17] Mexamerican, um, definitely guys show up if you're in Texas or not fly in, make it happen. I don't know.

[00:39:24] We got people listening from everywhere. So please, if you can, if you want to come on in,

[00:39:27] it's a free show. They can't pay for your tickets as far as flights or hotels, but

[00:39:31] you know, if you come out of town and I'll buy your soda, I'll do that. I'll do your solid.

[00:39:36] Okay. And also too, if you've got a family, yeah, for next year, if, and also I just want to highlight

[00:39:42] do something that you brought up Freddie, like about families, right? So, uh, we have activities

[00:39:46] for kids. It's free again. We really like to not charge anybody for anything. Um, so, uh, we have

[00:39:53] activity for, for kids. One of the things is, um, uh, games like, uh, throwing games, but we,

[00:40:00] we've taken away the balls and stuff and replace it with chanclas. So, um, chanclas chucking,

[00:40:06] uh, Mexican hole competition. Um, yes. So, um, just like it, uh, different, you know, like,

[00:40:14] you know, just little workshops, free sugar skulls, face painting, balloon twisting,

[00:40:18] all these different kinds of things to just keep, you know, keep your kids, um, you know,

[00:40:22] occupied somewhere in the corner over here from there are going to be pinatas over there.

[00:40:26] They're going to be pinata, um, displays. So a lot of different things again, just to make sure that

[00:40:32] the whole family can go. Cause you know, those of us with families, you just can't, you know,

[00:40:36] drag your kids along to be like, come over here to see this thing that mommy or daddy wants to see.

[00:40:41] Yeah. Um, you gotta have some face paintings important. Yes. Yes.

[00:40:45] And you can't forget the lotteria. We're going to have lotteria again. Oh, that's right. Sorry.

[00:40:49] This year we're going to be working with, uh, working with the guy out of California who has a, um,

[00:40:55] a lotteria deck that's going to, um, give us some feet. Let us feature his, uh, game this year.

[00:41:02] Um, so we're really excited about working with that. His name is Ernesto Quinones Curiel out of, uh,

[00:41:09] California. Um, and so we're really excited about that.

[00:41:12] And then the Wally, you're going to have a Wally game as well, right?

[00:41:16] Exactly. Yeah. We'll have that presentation as well.

[00:41:19] Gonzalo.

[00:41:20] You'll be there. Gonzalo. I know a lot of the old, it's fun to just kind of use a reunion,

[00:41:23] uh, but the Primos will be there. We have, we have something going on over there with the works.

[00:41:28] Um, and we're excited about that. It'll be my, my first time being involved with Mixamerican

[00:41:32] outside of being a guest, just being a guest and a patron, but I'm excited.

[00:41:35] We're excited. We're super excited to have y'all.

[00:41:37] We're big fans of the show.

[00:41:40] We're big fans.

[00:41:40] I appreciate it. I appreciate it. I tell people, I tell people, it's not just me playing radio.

[00:41:46] There's people listening. Okay. There's people listening. Okay. All right.

[00:41:50] You guys have a really great dynamic. I mean, it's, it's, it's entertaining. It's informative.

[00:41:55] So we're very, we're very happy to, to be on here and hopefully.

[00:42:02] Okay. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. It's great. It's right there. That's it.

[00:42:06] Burger King.

[00:42:06] There you go. Sit down, man. There's a Burger King.

[00:42:08] Love it.

[00:42:08] Literally. But Primos, I want to just, uh, we're going to, uh, uh, again, reiterate

[00:42:14] Mixamerican. And, uh, what are the socials? So people can follow, you know, follow along,

[00:42:18] find you guys, um, feel free. What is it?

[00:42:22] So on Instagram, uh, and Facebook, you can find us at Mexamerican, M-E-X-A-M-I-A-M-E-R-I-C-O-N.

[00:42:33] Catch us there. Uh, like, and share, please pass along the, you know, the word to all your family

[00:42:39] and friends. If you're out of, uh, out of state, please connect with those in state and let them know.

[00:42:44] Uh, if you're out of state and you can catch a flight over, come on, check us out.

[00:42:51] Never know, man.

[00:42:52] Come anyway. It doesn't matter how far you're coming from.

[00:42:54] Have fun.

[00:42:55] Yeah. And just on that note, we have artists and creators coming from, we have one coming from, uh, Sacramento.

[00:43:02] Um, we have people come from San Antonio, Dallas.

[00:43:06] I've heard you have artists from as far away as Austin.

[00:43:10] South Austin.

[00:43:12] Yeah. I'm coming from South Austin. There you go.

[00:43:15] There you go. It's such a, you gotta go through I-35. That's no joke, man.

[00:43:18] It's like, I got, and Ben White. I'm coming from way far away.

[00:43:21] Dang.

[00:43:23] Well, Primos, we're going to take a quick break here.

[00:43:26] Uh, we'll be right back with more from the show, our recommendations and more with Javi and Nino.

[00:43:31] Stay tuned.

[00:43:32] Cumbia.

[00:43:34] La vida sigue.

[00:43:36] La gente yola.

[00:43:39] El papato vuela.

[00:43:55] Thanks for hanging on with us, Primos, and we're back.

[00:43:57] So before we get into our recs, I wanted to bring something up we talked about last episode,

[00:44:01] and now we have thoughts here on the panel.

[00:44:03] But it was the Joker sequel, right?

[00:44:05] Joker 2, Falou de Kluke, that movie?

[00:44:10] The thing, the Joker, the second one.

[00:44:12] The thing, the-

[00:44:13] Electric Boogaloo.

[00:44:15] The foul, the foul of the foot.

[00:44:17] I mean, whatever, you know, that one.

[00:44:19] Um, so I read something, Kevin, I mentioned it before the show,

[00:44:22] and I think we're going to decide to hold on to it for until we get a recording, right?

[00:44:25] So, obviously, you guys know my thoughts about it, and, uh, I think go see it for yourself,

[00:44:29] but I recommend you watch The Wild Robot instead.

[00:44:32] Or anything else?

[00:44:34] Anything else?

[00:44:35] You know what?

[00:44:35] Megalopolis?

[00:44:36] Or Megalopolis?

[00:44:37] Never mind it.

[00:44:37] Maybe not that.

[00:44:38] You went to a whole different-

[00:44:40] Me and you can talk afterwards.

[00:44:42] Um, but here's the deal.

[00:44:44] Everything that I voiced, uh, was kind of echoed by a lot of different people, right?

[00:44:48] They all have their- their- their- their qualms, but overall,

[00:44:51] the people that are in our bubble kind of went like,

[00:44:54] hey, you know what?

[00:44:54] Kind of a shitty movie.

[00:44:55] Kind of bad.

[00:44:56] Didn't hold up, right?

[00:44:58] You know what I mean?

[00:44:58] You kind of shaking your head.

[00:44:59] Yeah.

[00:45:00] But, the fact that they went to defend themselves was amazing.

[00:45:05] There was everything from the studio saying,

[00:45:09] it's not my job.

[00:45:10] It was a director that had final say, so, you know, we- it's on him.

[00:45:15] Then the director going, you just didn't get it.

[00:45:19] Yeah, of course.

[00:45:20] It's- it's- it's because it's so- so obtuse and so different,

[00:45:24] and you- you're- you're not supposed to like Arthur.

[00:45:29] You're supposed to do this, and it's just- you don't get it.

[00:45:32] It's different.

[00:45:32] It's just so high art.

[00:45:34] The Italian- the Cannes Festival, it was amazing.

[00:45:37] People loved it at Cannes, and I'm like, okay.

[00:45:40] And then every other interview I read was people saying that it's just so new

[00:45:44] and so nouveau that we don't understand it,

[00:45:46] that it's so arty that we're just not supposed to get it.

[00:45:49] But 10 years from now, people will look back at this film

[00:45:52] and say that this was the start of the- of the- of the revolution

[00:45:55] between comic books and pop culture to become more high art.

[00:46:01] That's the high art revolution we're going.

[00:46:03] Did you say like Biodome?

[00:46:05] Like Biodome?

[00:46:06] It's like in the army now.

[00:46:08] I heard they were trying to make it the anti-musical musical

[00:46:10] because I guess musicals were too effeminate for them

[00:46:13] because they wanted to make it a more masculine version of a non-musical,

[00:46:16] but I'm like-

[00:46:18] A lot of guys already like musicals anyway, so I don't know why they do it.

[00:46:20] They do.

[00:46:21] I love musicals.

[00:46:21] Yeah.

[00:46:22] I used to say I hated them, and it turns out I was wrong.

[00:46:25] You were wrong.

[00:46:26] Then I watched Joker.

[00:46:27] What do you think, Kevin?

[00:46:28] I think he has some thoughts about this too.

[00:46:30] Like what are your thoughts on that kind of defense?

[00:46:32] My thoughts are just like, again, you know, my partner said it best,

[00:46:36] which is when Marvel's was struggling, which I think is a great movie,

[00:46:41] one of the most fun I've had in the MCU,

[00:46:44] and that's saying a lot considering how many movies they've got.

[00:46:46] But it flopped primarily in my view because prior to it coming out,

[00:46:51] there was a bunch of negative press,

[00:46:52] and everybody that would have come to the defense was honoring the strike.

[00:46:56] So when the strike ended, it was too late.

[00:46:59] The damage had been done, and nobody cared to watch it, right?

[00:47:02] But then what was the word?

[00:47:03] Oh, is it because it had a black director?

[00:47:05] Is it because it had a female director?

[00:47:06] Is it because it was a female-led thing?

[00:47:08] Is it because there were people of color in it?

[00:47:10] And what she was asking was, well, if Joker flops,

[00:47:13] are they going to start saying, well, if white men make a movie,

[00:47:15] does that mean it's going to flop?

[00:47:17] And I don't think that conversation is going to be had.

[00:47:20] They're floundering, man.

[00:47:21] They're defending and saying we don't get it.

[00:47:25] Man.

[00:47:27] And that's what you want to –

[00:47:28] you want to make a movie that nobody gets.

[00:47:30] Well, here's my question.

[00:47:31] I know you've seen it.

[00:47:32] Did you get it?

[00:47:34] I haven't seen it.

[00:47:36] I saw it.

[00:47:37] I didn't get it.

[00:47:40] It just went on way too long for me.

[00:47:42] It was just a little too much.

[00:47:46] But it was not even enough.

[00:47:48] It's one of those deals where watch it to talk shit, pretty much.

[00:47:54] Watch it just so you can be part of the conversation.

[00:47:56] But it's not something you want to be like, oh, man,

[00:47:58] I can't wait to go see it.

[00:47:59] No.

[00:48:00] This is shitty because, like you said,

[00:48:04] because it's a white man going,

[00:48:06] I know what art is, not you.

[00:48:09] And if it was a woman or if it was a person of color,

[00:48:12] it'd be literally – they'd talk shit,

[00:48:14] like we talked about in the last episode.

[00:48:15] They'd say, oh, that's why we don't let you guys make movies.

[00:48:18] You know?

[00:48:19] Oh, that's the last time we get a black director.

[00:48:21] Oh, that's the last time we get a Latina director

[00:48:22] or a female director because look what happens, right?

[00:48:25] But because it's these old white guys,

[00:48:28] the guy did The Hangover and Joker.

[00:48:30] Okay.

[00:48:30] I mean, I guess.

[00:48:33] Mr. Creepy, right?

[00:48:34] I didn't realize that.

[00:48:35] Yeah, exactly.

[00:48:36] The Hangover.

[00:48:37] He also did the old school, I think.

[00:48:38] Basically movies that I was not a fan of.

[00:48:41] You know?

[00:48:41] Not my kind of thing.

[00:48:42] I mean, I laugh at it.

[00:48:43] Remember the character that he played in those movies?

[00:48:46] No.

[00:48:46] The character was in the movies?

[00:48:47] Yeah, he was in those movies.

[00:48:49] He was the guy that was smelling people's feet,

[00:48:51] like smelling that lady's feet in the –

[00:48:52] and he was like all –

[00:48:53] he was always, I don't know, smelling things.

[00:48:55] I think his character is Mr. Creepy.

[00:48:57] Anyway.

[00:48:58] Todd Phillips.

[00:48:58] He's creepy in real life.

[00:49:00] Todd Phillips, there you go.

[00:49:00] But yeah, like The Hangover and here's Joker.

[00:49:02] You got to –

[00:49:04] I enjoyed the first film,

[00:49:05] and here we are talking about it again.

[00:49:06] But I think it's shitty because the excuses are shitty.

[00:49:09] The fact that because it's an old white guy saying,

[00:49:12] you just don't get it, you're wrong.

[00:49:14] But if it were the way around,

[00:49:15] that's what irks me the most.

[00:49:16] There's plenty of films that were great.

[00:49:18] Yeah.

[00:49:19] If I got a dollar every time an old white man told me that,

[00:49:23] I might be able to buy a house.

[00:49:25] There you go.

[00:49:26] We need Ella to direct the next film.

[00:49:29] I'm directing the next Joker.

[00:49:31] Yeah, it's going to be a silent film.

[00:49:32] Are you going to hire Gaga again?

[00:49:33] I know you're a Gaga fan.

[00:49:34] Yeah, I'm going to give Gaga a second chance,

[00:49:35] but it's going to be a silent film with puppets.

[00:49:38] It's actually going to be a Muppet version.

[00:49:39] And it must be in 3D,

[00:49:41] but only in the old school red and blue glasses.

[00:49:45] Yeah.

[00:49:45] Yeah, everyone gets a pair.

[00:49:47] We're bringing 3D movies back.

[00:49:49] I want the seats that shake.

[00:49:51] Oh, yeah.

[00:49:51] We need the little buzzer in the seat

[00:49:53] that every time something happens,

[00:49:54] we're like, oh, something happens.

[00:49:56] They should have at least had –

[00:49:57] if it was like a musical,

[00:49:58] I think they should have at least had Batman in there

[00:50:00] to do that really growly voice singing in there.

[00:50:03] I haven't seen the movie, so.

[00:50:04] I can just –

[00:50:05] You know, like try to –

[00:50:07] It's just bad, dude.

[00:50:08] It's just bad.

[00:50:09] If the Batusi wasn't done at least once,

[00:50:10] I'll be very disappointed.

[00:50:12] Didn't Prince make a dope Batman video?

[00:50:14] I'm just going to say.

[00:50:14] Yes, he did.

[00:50:15] It was very dope.

[00:50:16] There we go, Batdance.

[00:50:17] But, guys, we'll move forward here

[00:50:19] into the night with recommendations

[00:50:21] just to close out the show.

[00:50:23] And, of course, you know,

[00:50:24] I want to just thank everybody for listening.

[00:50:27] Make sure you follow the show

[00:50:28] at My Primo's Podcast

[00:50:29] and follow at Mexamerican as well.

[00:50:31] Go check out the show.

[00:50:33] So, you know,

[00:50:33] we have a lot of fun on the show here,

[00:50:35] but let's just not forget

[00:50:35] that this is about presenting our stories,

[00:50:39] our culture,

[00:50:39] our community out there,

[00:50:40] and let's just go support each other.

[00:50:42] You know?

[00:50:43] Like I said,

[00:50:43] let's not go burn dollars at the theater

[00:50:45] and watch the fruity films

[00:50:47] that apparently we don't understand.

[00:50:48] Let's go watch our stories.

[00:50:50] Let's go see our faces.

[00:50:51] Let's go see our art.

[00:50:52] You know, whatever it may be.

[00:50:53] So definitely check that out.

[00:50:55] But recommendations.

[00:50:57] Let's start with Javi, man.

[00:50:59] What's something that you recommend

[00:50:59] for the primos to check out?

[00:51:01] Like, be it whatever it may be, man.

[00:51:02] It may be a movie, TV, a book,

[00:51:04] whatever you're into right now.

[00:51:06] On Hulu, there's this show called This Fool.

[00:51:10] I don't know if y'all have checked that out or not yet.

[00:51:12] Never heard of it.

[00:51:12] Oh, yeah.

[00:51:14] Oh, yeah.

[00:51:14] I mean, I'm digging that.

[00:51:16] I mean, it gets kind of,

[00:51:16] it goes off the rails a little bit

[00:51:18] towards the end,

[00:51:18] but I love it.

[00:51:19] It is great.

[00:51:21] I love the mom.

[00:51:23] So that's cool.

[00:51:24] Also, it's,

[00:51:25] I was telling Nino that

[00:51:27] re-watching Scarface,

[00:51:29] but just specifically

[00:51:31] for the times where

[00:51:32] he should be speaking Spanish

[00:51:33] and he doesn't,

[00:51:35] that's hilarious to me too.

[00:51:37] Like, everybody's speaking Spanish.

[00:51:38] And so he's speaking with a bad accent

[00:51:40] is not Spanish.

[00:51:42] That's what I'm saying.

[00:51:43] Are you sure?

[00:51:43] It is just like,

[00:51:45] you know,

[00:51:45] Spanish, Spanish,

[00:51:46] and like,

[00:51:46] amen, conyo.

[00:51:47] Like, you can't just say conyo

[00:51:48] like for everything.

[00:51:49] It's horrible.

[00:51:50] So, yeah,

[00:51:51] maybe a drinking game

[00:51:52] or something like that

[00:51:53] for water.

[00:51:54] I don't want to,

[00:51:55] you know.

[00:51:55] I like that.

[00:51:55] I like that.

[00:51:56] I like that.

[00:51:57] It always reminded me

[00:51:57] when I think of Scarface

[00:51:58] and I think of Pacino,

[00:52:00] for some reason,

[00:52:01] I always remember

[00:52:01] Mark Anthony was an actor

[00:52:03] and I feel like he was

[00:52:04] Yeah, he played a bad guy,

[00:52:05] right?

[00:52:06] He played a bad guy.

[00:52:07] The substitute, right?

[00:52:07] He was like the gangster guy.

[00:52:09] Yeah.

[00:52:10] Yep.

[00:52:10] And he was in

[00:52:12] Only the Strong

[00:52:13] with Mark Dacascos

[00:52:15] where he teaches them

[00:52:16] street capoeira

[00:52:16] in the inner city of Miami.

[00:52:18] Oh, I remember that movie.

[00:52:20] I don't remember

[00:52:20] he was in there.

[00:52:22] That's awesome.

[00:52:22] He was in that movie, man.

[00:52:23] He had a ponytail.

[00:52:24] That's on my list now.

[00:52:25] There you go.

[00:52:26] Only the Strong.

[00:52:27] That's not my recommendation,

[00:52:28] though,

[00:52:28] but definitely a fun,

[00:52:30] fun-filled time had by all

[00:52:31] because he's now

[00:52:32] the Iron Chef.

[00:52:32] He runs Iron Chef,

[00:52:33] Mark Dacascos?

[00:52:34] He is.

[00:52:35] Really?

[00:52:35] He is now the dude

[00:52:36] that comes out

[00:52:37] with the shaved head

[00:52:37] and is like,

[00:52:38] Iron Chef.

[00:52:39] He's that dude.

[00:52:40] Yeah, I've never seen

[00:52:41] him at a convention before.

[00:52:43] Oh, yeah?

[00:52:43] You don't see him pleased.

[00:52:45] Did he cook for you?

[00:52:46] No, it was a cool experience.

[00:52:47] I just,

[00:52:47] I thought that was really cool.

[00:52:49] But like,

[00:52:49] I liked his other stuff

[00:52:50] and everybody's like,

[00:52:50] yeah, the Iron Chef guy.

[00:52:51] I'm like,

[00:52:51] oh, that too.

[00:52:52] Yeah, okay.

[00:52:54] Mark Dacascos is super karate

[00:52:55] and capoeira.

[00:52:57] It was awesome.

[00:52:58] But for sure,

[00:52:59] this fool's dope.

[00:53:00] I love it.

[00:53:01] It's fun.

[00:53:02] Nina, what about you, man?

[00:53:03] Something that people

[00:53:03] can recommend

[00:53:04] to the Primos out there?

[00:53:05] Something to read,

[00:53:05] watch, listen to?

[00:53:06] Just, you know,

[00:53:07] anything that you feel

[00:53:08] they would dig.

[00:53:09] I'll kind of go along

[00:53:10] with like that small screen

[00:53:11] feel with Javier.

[00:53:13] There's actually a show

[00:53:14] called Primos.

[00:53:15] I don't know

[00:53:15] if y'all have seen that one.

[00:53:17] But there's one called Primos.

[00:53:19] I'm sorry.

[00:53:20] Freebie, I think,

[00:53:21] is what it's on.

[00:53:22] Interesting show.

[00:53:23] Great.

[00:53:24] Yeah, great show.

[00:53:26] Really dig that one.

[00:53:27] Other than that,

[00:53:29] right now,

[00:53:30] I'm just really deep

[00:53:30] in Mexamerican, obviously.

[00:53:33] You know,

[00:53:34] follow the artists.

[00:53:35] The lore of Mexamerican.

[00:53:37] Yeah, as we feature our artists,

[00:53:39] you know,

[00:53:39] put a call out to everybody

[00:53:41] to, you know,

[00:53:41] go and follow those artists.

[00:53:43] If you can't make it again,

[00:53:44] if you're far away

[00:53:46] or just not available,

[00:53:48] you know,

[00:53:48] follow those artists.

[00:53:49] Give them a shout out.

[00:53:51] Follow their work.

[00:53:52] Follow their Kickstarters.

[00:53:53] You know,

[00:53:54] just support,

[00:53:54] support, support.

[00:53:56] It's really the main thing.

[00:53:57] And then, again,

[00:53:58] Mexamerican.

[00:53:58] Come check us out.

[00:54:00] Mexamerican.

[00:54:01] All right.

[00:54:01] Elia, what about you?

[00:54:02] It's something that's,

[00:54:03] I mean,

[00:54:04] just give us some,

[00:54:05] give us an update.

[00:54:06] Did you watch any more

[00:54:07] Primos the cartoon?

[00:54:08] No.

[00:54:09] I,

[00:54:09] I need,

[00:54:10] I need,

[00:54:11] I need a minute from it.

[00:54:13] But,

[00:54:13] I will tell you

[00:54:14] what I have been consuming.

[00:54:16] Uh-oh.

[00:54:17] So,

[00:54:18] tiny hands.

[00:54:18] Not so much recommendations,

[00:54:20] but I've been on a very big,

[00:54:22] I'm going to consume

[00:54:23] Caucasian media

[00:54:25] and see what I like.

[00:54:27] So,

[00:54:27] first of all,

[00:54:28] started and finished

[00:54:29] Sex and the City.

[00:54:31] I started during my break,

[00:54:32] finished it.

[00:54:33] The whole thing?

[00:54:36] Yeah,

[00:54:36] no,

[00:54:37] it was like,

[00:54:37] I liked Sex and the City,

[00:54:38] dude.

[00:54:38] I watched it when it came out too.

[00:54:40] So,

[00:54:40] yeah,

[00:54:40] it was,

[00:54:40] it was okay.

[00:54:41] I don't like any of

[00:54:43] the characters

[00:54:44] except Samantha.

[00:54:45] And then,

[00:54:46] when I went to go watch

[00:54:47] the second,

[00:54:48] like the,

[00:54:48] the reboot,

[00:54:49] just like that,

[00:54:50] and I found out

[00:54:51] Samantha wasn't in it,

[00:54:52] I'm like,

[00:54:52] I hate this.

[00:54:53] This is not why

[00:54:54] Samantha made the show.

[00:54:57] Um,

[00:54:57] I know that doesn't mean

[00:54:58] anything to anyone,

[00:54:59] but like,

[00:54:59] I,

[00:55:00] like,

[00:55:01] um,

[00:55:01] so yeah,

[00:55:01] I,

[00:55:02] I see why.

[00:55:03] That's the only name

[00:55:03] I remember.

[00:55:04] Yeah.

[00:55:05] Did you see this?

[00:55:06] What's the only name?

[00:55:07] When you said that,

[00:55:07] it was the sex.

[00:55:08] You're such a Samantha,

[00:55:10] you know,

[00:55:11] you're such a Samantha.

[00:55:12] Iconic queen.

[00:55:13] Um,

[00:55:14] but I'm,

[00:55:14] I'm still going to continue

[00:55:15] watching,

[00:55:16] uh,

[00:55:17] and just like,

[00:55:17] or just like that.

[00:55:18] I think it's,

[00:55:18] I don't even know

[00:55:19] the name of it,

[00:55:20] but,

[00:55:21] um,

[00:55:21] they had more diversity

[00:55:23] in the newer one,

[00:55:24] of course,

[00:55:25] because like in the nineties,

[00:55:26] they wouldn't let tan people

[00:55:26] on TV,

[00:55:27] I guess,

[00:55:28] whatever.

[00:55:28] Um,

[00:55:29] but yeah,

[00:55:30] so watched it,

[00:55:31] enjoyed it.

[00:55:32] It was okay.

[00:55:33] Um,

[00:55:33] not my favorite series.

[00:55:34] Um,

[00:55:35] and then right now,

[00:55:37] I'm watching,

[00:55:38] uh,

[00:55:39] the secret lives

[00:55:40] of Mormon wives.

[00:55:43] Whoa.

[00:55:43] And it is insane.

[00:55:46] Like,

[00:55:46] they,

[00:55:47] like,

[00:55:48] they kind of party harder

[00:55:49] than I do.

[00:55:50] Like,

[00:55:51] and it's,

[00:55:52] it's crazy.

[00:55:53] So that's the next reality

[00:55:55] trash TV I'm going through

[00:55:57] right now.

[00:55:58] I used to stay in Utah

[00:56:00] and,

[00:56:00] uh,

[00:56:00] yeah,

[00:56:01] it's a whole other world.

[00:56:02] Take place in Utah.

[00:56:03] Yeah.

[00:56:04] It's a whole other world over there.

[00:56:06] Man.

[00:56:06] I don't know,

[00:56:06] Javi,

[00:56:06] that speaks volumes,

[00:56:08] man.

[00:56:08] Just like,

[00:56:08] your vibe.

[00:56:09] Like,

[00:56:09] yeah,

[00:56:10] I party with Mormons.

[00:56:11] It's like,

[00:56:12] kind of scary.

[00:56:13] We don't know what you do.

[00:56:14] You know what I mean?

[00:56:14] I don't know.

[00:56:17] That's for Javi to know.

[00:56:19] Yeah,

[00:56:19] Javi to know.

[00:56:20] And there's nothing in that state

[00:56:21] that has caffeine in it.

[00:56:23] And they use fry sauce.

[00:56:24] They're just a little,

[00:56:25] a little interesting tidbit there.

[00:56:27] When you go to McDonald's,

[00:56:28] they have fry sauce,

[00:56:29] which is their own special thing.

[00:56:32] Yeah.

[00:56:33] anyway.

[00:56:34] No,

[00:56:34] it's,

[00:56:35] no,

[00:56:35] yeah,

[00:56:36] for sure.

[00:56:36] Cause like on the show,

[00:56:37] I think it was like,

[00:56:38] it's not an alcohol state.

[00:56:40] So it's like,

[00:56:41] there's only soda bars every so often,

[00:56:43] but yeah,

[00:56:43] there's no caffeine.

[00:56:44] The soda.

[00:56:45] It was so,

[00:56:45] I'm like,

[00:56:46] wow.

[00:56:48] It's a whole culture.

[00:56:49] Weird.

[00:56:50] Yeah.

[00:56:50] Beautiful country though.

[00:56:51] It's like really,

[00:56:52] really nice.

[00:56:52] Yeah.

[00:56:53] It looks pretty.

[00:56:54] It looks pretty,

[00:56:55] but yeah.

[00:56:56] So that's like my trash TV.

[00:56:58] I do want to go on a quick rant

[00:56:59] about a certain movie.

[00:57:01] I watched it for the first time

[00:57:02] this weekend.

[00:57:03] Ooh,

[00:57:03] what is it?

[00:57:04] Pinocchio.

[00:57:05] Disney's Pinocchio.

[00:57:07] The OG.

[00:57:08] The OG one.

[00:57:09] Okay.

[00:57:10] Okay.

[00:57:11] Some of it doesn't age.

[00:57:13] I don't think,

[00:57:14] okay.

[00:57:15] So I cared more about the,

[00:57:19] the boys being trafficked to become donkeys issue.

[00:57:24] Then I cared about any of the entire plot.

[00:57:26] I'm like,

[00:57:26] leave it behind.

[00:57:27] They don't dress it again.

[00:57:27] I was so upset.

[00:57:29] I'm like,

[00:57:30] I don't care about Pinocchio and Geppetto anymore.

[00:57:32] Like,

[00:57:32] and then Jiminy Cricket,

[00:57:33] useless as all hell.

[00:57:35] Useless.

[00:57:35] Okay.

[00:57:36] One of the conspiracy theories is that donkey from Shrek

[00:57:39] was one of those kids.

[00:57:43] Really?

[00:57:44] Oh my God.

[00:57:45] The lore.

[00:57:45] It's,

[00:57:46] you know what?

[00:57:47] I'll accept that.

[00:57:49] If they will give me that.

[00:57:50] What fairy tale did he come from?

[00:57:51] You know?

[00:57:51] Exactly.

[00:57:52] That's so true.

[00:57:54] Shrek.

[00:57:55] Shrek knows more than anyone.

[00:57:57] You guys.

[00:57:57] Shrek is love.

[00:57:58] Shrek is love.

[00:57:59] Shrek goes deep.

[00:58:00] Shrek goes deep.

[00:58:01] You got to fill back them layers.

[00:58:03] He goes deep.

[00:58:05] Feel that hole.

[00:58:06] Feel that hole in that spot.

[00:58:07] At the end of the day,

[00:58:08] Shrek.

[00:58:09] Shrek.

[00:58:09] And look,

[00:58:10] that little kid grew up to make dragon babies.

[00:58:13] So,

[00:58:13] I'm okay with that.

[00:58:14] That's true.

[00:58:14] Yeah.

[00:58:15] He got busy.

[00:58:16] He got busy.

[00:58:17] There's a lot there to like that.

[00:58:18] But no,

[00:58:18] yeah,

[00:58:18] Pinocchio was just like,

[00:58:20] it was just so,

[00:58:20] I'm like,

[00:58:21] I don't even care about Pinocchio anymore.

[00:58:24] Can we resolve this issue going on?

[00:58:28] But no,

[00:58:29] it was,

[00:58:29] it was a ride that I was like,

[00:58:31] I don't care.

[00:58:32] It's just like trafficking happens.

[00:58:34] Just accept it and move on.

[00:58:35] Yeah,

[00:58:35] move on.

[00:58:36] We're still going to find this puppet's dad in a whale.

[00:58:38] What you're saying is you need to have the,

[00:58:40] the,

[00:58:41] the taken Pinocchio sequel.

[00:58:44] Yeah.

[00:58:45] I'm going to find the monkeys and I have a special set of skills.

[00:58:48] Right.

[00:58:48] I'll watch it.

[00:58:49] I'll fund it.

[00:58:51] Look at it.

[00:58:52] Make it happen,

[00:58:52] man.

[00:58:53] I'm done with Liam Neeson and everything.

[00:58:54] I'll draw the forbidden comic,

[00:58:56] the sequel.

[00:58:57] Done.

[00:58:58] Just,

[00:58:58] just,

[00:58:58] it's always weird when you see like Liam Neeson.

[00:59:01] I've seen Liam Neeson in like action roles,

[00:59:04] right?

[00:59:04] Like a hero,

[00:59:05] a bad guy.

[00:59:06] He fought a wolf on a mountain.

[00:59:08] You're like,

[00:59:09] he did a bunch of crazy stuff.

[00:59:10] Right.

[00:59:11] And then I don't know where you see him do.

[00:59:12] Like Liam Neeson's,

[00:59:13] uh,

[00:59:14] and a romantic comedy.

[00:59:16] And it kind of throws me off.

[00:59:17] Like he's going to choke her in the bathroom,

[00:59:19] right?

[00:59:19] Like he's not going to romantic comedies before that though.

[00:59:21] That's the thing.

[00:59:22] No,

[00:59:22] sorry.

[00:59:23] No,

[00:59:24] it's like Stallone.

[00:59:25] I'm in love with you.

[00:59:26] Like,

[00:59:26] like it doesn't work.

[00:59:27] Like,

[00:59:28] you know,

[00:59:28] he's Stallone.

[00:59:29] He doesn't do like Oscar for the romance.

[00:59:32] I heart Huckabees or whatever.

[00:59:34] You know what I mean?

[00:59:35] From the train.

[00:59:36] Now that,

[00:59:36] it wasn't a,

[00:59:37] uh,

[00:59:38] stop for my mom.

[00:59:39] I'll shoot.

[00:59:39] That's a classic.

[00:59:40] I actually saw that in theaters.

[00:59:41] Ah,

[00:59:41] that one was pretty funny.

[00:59:43] Tango and cash.

[00:59:43] See,

[00:59:44] there's no romance there.

[00:59:45] It's a bad-ass him and Kurt Russell.

[00:59:47] I'm sorry.

[00:59:47] I digress.

[00:59:48] Uh,

[00:59:49] Kevin Garcia,

[00:59:49] what about you,

[00:59:50] man?

[00:59:50] What do you recommend this week?

[00:59:51] There's a,

[00:59:52] two things that I've been,

[00:59:53] uh,

[00:59:53] or have watched recently that I do want to bring up.

[00:59:56] One is I just saw a,

[00:59:58] a indie is not the right word.

[01:00:00] Um,

[01:00:01] art house,

[01:00:01] maybe a film called a different man starring,

[01:00:04] uh,

[01:00:04] Sebastian Stan,

[01:00:05] you know,

[01:00:05] the winter soldier.

[01:00:06] And this is where he plays a character that has severe,

[01:00:11] severe facial differences.

[01:00:12] And he's got like a lot of makeup on his face to show that.

[01:00:15] Um,

[01:00:16] you know,

[01:00:16] like there've been other movies like the elephant man and things like that

[01:00:18] before.

[01:00:18] Wow.

[01:00:19] What makes this interesting is that the,

[01:00:21] one of the other major,

[01:00:22] major roles in the movie is Adam Pearson,

[01:00:25] who is a man who is born with severe facial differences.

[01:00:28] And that becomes a plot point throughout the movie.

[01:00:31] And it's really good.

[01:00:32] Um,

[01:00:33] it,

[01:00:33] it,

[01:00:34] it straddles the line between being preachy and entertaining,

[01:00:37] and it never quite becomes preachy.

[01:00:40] And I appreciate that.

[01:00:40] Like you can still have a very clear message.

[01:00:42] But it doesn't ever like hit you over the head with it.

[01:00:45] Instead.

[01:00:45] It's like,

[01:00:46] what the hell am I watching?

[01:00:47] There's body horror halfway through this.

[01:00:48] And then suddenly it's comedy.

[01:00:49] And also there's,

[01:00:50] you know,

[01:00:50] it's weird.

[01:00:51] And it's great.

[01:00:52] Um,

[01:00:52] so highly recommend that if you go,

[01:00:54] if you want to seek that out,

[01:00:55] uh,

[01:00:55] although fair warning,

[01:00:57] there is brief moments of body horror,

[01:00:59] a little bit of Cronenberg stuff.

[01:01:00] The other thing that I watched recently that I really need to recommend

[01:01:03] that I cannot recommend enough,

[01:01:05] um,

[01:01:05] is chaos spelled with a K K A O S,

[01:01:09] which is a Netflix series starring Jeff Goldblum.

[01:01:11] And just about everybody you've ever heard of all the way from him to,

[01:01:14] um,

[01:01:15] Eddie Susie Izzard,

[01:01:16] who's in there.

[01:01:17] You know,

[01:01:17] they got a bunch of people in this,

[01:01:18] in the show.

[01:01:19] It is beautiful.

[01:01:20] It's a bit horrific.

[01:01:21] It's great.

[01:01:22] And then,

[01:01:23] you know,

[01:01:23] what happens?

[01:01:23] They just today announced that they're going to cancel it before season two.

[01:01:26] Yep.

[01:01:27] And,

[01:01:27] uh,

[01:01:28] it is so good.

[01:01:30] Now,

[01:01:30] admittedly,

[01:01:30] as I was watching it,

[01:01:31] I'm on the second.

[01:01:33] Yeah.

[01:01:33] I'm on the second to last episode.

[01:01:35] And I'm like,

[01:01:35] when this resolves,

[01:01:36] there's no reason to do a sequel.

[01:01:37] I guess it's a really good,

[01:01:39] just one and done season.

[01:01:40] The last episode is like,

[01:01:41] no,

[01:01:41] no,

[01:01:42] we're going to do more.

[01:01:42] We're going to do more.

[01:01:43] And I'm like,

[01:01:44] okay,

[01:01:44] I'm down for this.

[01:01:45] I'll see where they go with this.

[01:01:46] And no,

[01:01:46] we're not going to see where they go with this.

[01:01:48] I'm going to cry.

[01:01:48] I was so excited for that series,

[01:01:52] but,

[01:01:53] but I want to point out tying this to a different man.

[01:01:56] There you've heard of like,

[01:01:58] um,

[01:01:59] uh,

[01:01:59] what is it?

[01:01:59] Hamilton having like colorblind casting and stuff.

[01:02:02] Um,

[01:02:03] chaos does that as well.

[01:02:04] There's a lot of big name stars,

[01:02:05] but it not only does it not matter what your,

[01:02:08] you know,

[01:02:08] racial or national or ethnic background is.

[01:02:11] There's also body differences throughout the movie that are not plot

[01:02:15] points.

[01:02:15] They're just people who have different bodies.

[01:02:17] And it's like,

[01:02:19] I see that the kind of people that would go after,

[01:02:21] you know,

[01:02:23] Marvel's or,

[01:02:24] you know,

[01:02:25] whatever for not being straight white male casts are going to be like,

[01:02:29] Oh,

[01:02:29] I don't like this.

[01:02:30] And we should cancel it.

[01:02:31] Uh,

[01:02:31] you know,

[01:02:32] I just,

[01:02:32] heck,

[01:02:32] I just saw an article today that said one of my favorite games,

[01:02:35] um,

[01:02:35] her,

[01:02:35] the horizon series on PlayStation is getting a lot of hate right now saying

[01:02:39] that,

[01:02:39] that there it's fake being propped up because there's like LGBT themes in

[01:02:43] it.

[01:02:43] And it's like,

[01:02:44] of course that's going to make people think it's fake when I've been

[01:02:46] enjoying it since I first played it,

[01:02:47] you know?

[01:02:48] Yeah.

[01:02:50] Kevin,

[01:02:51] you did hear they're making the ghost of Susima ghost of Yote.

[01:02:54] Yes.

[01:02:54] I am excited about that.

[01:02:56] I'm super excited about that.

[01:02:57] And not only female,

[01:02:58] but,

[01:02:58] but middle-aged,

[01:02:59] which,

[01:02:59] Oh,

[01:03:00] that's going to piss people off,

[01:03:01] but it looks so good.

[01:03:02] And I,

[01:03:03] and I,

[01:03:03] and I,

[01:03:04] I was late coming into that game.

[01:03:05] My friend,

[01:03:06] my brother got me into it eventually about a couple of years after it came

[01:03:09] out,

[01:03:09] but,

[01:03:09] Oh man,

[01:03:10] I loved it so much.

[01:03:10] And that sequel,

[01:03:11] just every little bit of it we've seen beautiful.

[01:03:14] It looks perfect.

[01:03:14] Video games,

[01:03:15] man,

[01:03:15] video games.

[01:03:16] Cause,

[01:03:17] that's what I've been doing,

[01:03:18] man.

[01:03:18] I've been playing a lot of games recently.

[01:03:19] So I've been in my,

[01:03:19] my,

[01:03:20] my deal here,

[01:03:21] but recommendations there's,

[01:03:22] I've been doing kind of a,

[01:03:25] a class.

[01:03:26] I get corrupted and then I go get cleansed kind of deal.

[01:03:28] Cause I,

[01:03:29] I like my brain.

[01:03:30] I need to,

[01:03:30] cause if I go to bed and I like,

[01:03:32] here's a deal do it.

[01:03:34] And that's an older game.

[01:03:35] So just bear with me,

[01:03:36] but I do recommend it for the,

[01:03:37] the gamer that's comfortable with the context of which the violence takes

[01:03:41] place.

[01:03:41] It's not a gore deal at all,

[01:03:43] at all.

[01:03:44] It's not hotline Miami.

[01:03:46] Anybody hear the name?

[01:03:47] Know the name?

[01:03:49] Hotline Miami.

[01:03:51] Hotline Miami is an eight bit looking like Nintendo issue.

[01:03:55] Game.

[01:03:56] Okay.

[01:03:56] But it's the bloodiest like game you'd play because literally it's a

[01:04:00] one hit kill kind of game.

[01:04:02] And the premise of the story is what really sells you.

[01:04:04] I'll put it to you this way.

[01:04:05] I rediscovered it because my son had an interest in him.

[01:04:08] He's 15 now.

[01:04:10] And I said,

[01:04:10] fine,

[01:04:10] let's do it.

[01:04:11] Let's do hotline Miami.

[01:04:12] Cause I did it at one point.

[01:04:13] But when I tell you that the,

[01:04:14] the,

[01:04:14] the,

[01:04:15] here's the pitch for it,

[01:04:16] it's drive the game.

[01:04:18] Okay.

[01:04:18] The Ryan Gosling movie,

[01:04:19] it's drive the game.

[01:04:20] The guy literally gets a phone call and it's coded.

[01:04:23] Hey,

[01:04:23] I need a babysitter on fifth street.

[01:04:25] I got eight kids and then he up and I'll bring the toys,

[01:04:28] you know,

[01:04:28] all coded messages and you show up and you clear house.

[01:04:31] You basically kill everybody in there,

[01:04:33] but the story stacks on top of each other where you're learning that

[01:04:36] who's making these phone calls.

[01:04:38] Why are you being forced to doing this?

[01:04:40] Cause the characters are eight bit characters.

[01:04:41] So they're not like a GTA,

[01:04:43] a real life like looking game.

[01:04:44] It's all like eight bit looking games,

[01:04:46] but it is bloody.

[01:04:47] You die at one hit,

[01:04:49] but it's that repeat cycle.

[01:04:50] You instantly respond and go again until you can beat the level.

[01:04:52] But the story is what it puts me in there.

[01:04:55] Everything from,

[01:04:56] uh,

[01:04:56] the Russell American war,

[01:04:58] uh,

[01:04:58] things from like,

[01:05:00] there's some really like dark themes in this,

[01:05:02] in the,

[01:05:03] in the story itself.

[01:05:04] And you don't really pay attention as a,

[01:05:06] as a kid playing it.

[01:05:08] But when you're of the right mind,

[01:05:10] it opens your brain up to this whole different dark world.

[01:05:13] So I,

[01:05:14] I would say I recommend it for those that,

[01:05:16] that are not won't shy away from it,

[01:05:18] that are comfortable with the context of it,

[01:05:20] because there is,

[01:05:21] it's violence and there are some,

[01:05:23] uh,

[01:05:24] there is one essay theme that shows up in there.

[01:05:27] They even say,

[01:05:27] if you're not comfortable with this skip,

[01:05:29] like it's,

[01:05:29] it,

[01:05:29] it gives you that option,

[01:05:31] but it,

[01:05:32] it drives home the message.

[01:05:33] It does all this while having a retro vibe,

[01:05:35] right?

[01:05:36] A hundred percent.

[01:05:37] It little face place in eighties,

[01:05:39] Miami talking about Scarface.

[01:05:40] It's like,

[01:05:41] it's Scarface and drive with the music,

[01:05:43] the,

[01:05:44] the clothes,

[01:05:45] the guy drives a DeLorean to go kill people.

[01:05:47] Like that's the whole deal.

[01:05:48] Like he is all about that eighties vibe,

[01:05:50] that synth music.

[01:05:52] If you play the music,

[01:05:53] it makes you want to go commit a crime.

[01:05:55] Like that's how good the music is.

[01:05:56] Like it's good.

[01:05:58] Grand Theft Auto three did that for me the first time I played it.

[01:06:00] Like,

[01:06:00] yeah,

[01:06:00] it's like my city.

[01:06:01] Right.

[01:06:01] But like,

[01:06:02] it's,

[01:06:02] it's such a deep game.

[01:06:03] It's great.

[01:06:04] My kid,

[01:06:05] like,

[01:06:05] for his birthday,

[01:06:06] I got him the sequel.

[01:06:07] It was like on sale for like a dollar 50.

[01:06:08] It's like a 10 year old game.

[01:06:10] Right.

[01:06:10] But the point is,

[01:06:11] it looks really good.

[01:06:13] I'm a,

[01:06:13] I'm a,

[01:06:13] I'm a big fan of,

[01:06:14] I know the retro stuff is kind of overdone in gaming a lot,

[01:06:16] but I'm actually a big fan of it.

[01:06:18] And the vibe you're talking about kind of reminds me of a game I played

[01:06:20] right before the pandemic called Katana zero,

[01:06:23] which is a side scroller,

[01:06:24] but also is done in this retro vibe.

[01:06:26] And it's,

[01:06:26] you're like a samurai who is also maybe a time traveler or maybe psychic,

[01:06:31] or maybe he's amnesiac.

[01:06:32] And it's all that at once.

[01:06:33] And it's like,

[01:06:34] yeah,

[01:06:35] I could dig that.

[01:06:36] This game has,

[01:06:37] it's like,

[01:06:38] you're,

[01:06:38] you're watching a Tarantino movie.

[01:06:41] Cause it's literally,

[01:06:41] it's bloody.

[01:06:42] There's tons of dialogue.

[01:06:44] There are cut scenes,

[01:06:45] but it's all eight bit.

[01:06:45] And then it flips and it becomes memento with like reservoir dogs kind of mixed

[01:06:50] together at the end.

[01:06:50] It's,

[01:06:51] it's a,

[01:06:51] it's really,

[01:06:52] really good.

[01:06:52] I really recommend it for story and gameplay wise.

[01:06:55] Your hook.

[01:06:55] It's like super cheap.

[01:06:56] It's on everything.

[01:06:57] It's on every single console,

[01:06:59] computer switch.

[01:06:59] It's on everything.

[01:07:00] So definitely check that out.

[01:07:02] And why I play that.

[01:07:03] Then I have to kind of like cleanse my eyeballs and kind of like eye bleach.

[01:07:08] There's a show that I kind of fell into watching and no idea I was going to love it as much as I love it.

[01:07:13] And I've been,

[01:07:13] I've me and my wife have been watching it nonstop and it's a show called Bob and Abby Shola.

[01:07:19] Have you guys heard of this or know of this?

[01:07:22] It's a sitcom where it's a white,

[01:07:25] old white guy has a heart attack,

[01:07:28] goes to the hospital,

[01:07:30] falls in love with a nurse that's from Nigeria,

[01:07:32] from Lagos.

[01:07:33] And they end up having a relationship together and legit like fall in love.

[01:07:38] And it's the whole clash of different cultures,

[01:07:41] you know,

[01:07:41] them getting to know each other,

[01:07:42] you know,

[01:07:43] white guy from Nigeria,

[01:07:46] the mixing of the cultures from everything from the church to the business and the kids.

[01:07:52] It's really,

[01:07:52] really,

[01:07:53] really,

[01:07:53] really heartfelt,

[01:07:54] really funny.

[01:07:55] I am definitely curious.

[01:07:58] Never knew much about the Nigerian like home life and culture.

[01:08:02] And they really respect it from what I've read online about it.

[01:08:04] It's kind of true to force.

[01:08:06] And it's a lot of correlations with the Latino culture to everything about like,

[01:08:10] Hey,

[01:08:10] stop crying,

[01:08:10] get over it,

[01:08:11] go to work.

[01:08:12] You'll be fine.

[01:08:12] The harder you work,

[01:08:13] the better you'll be.

[01:08:14] Oh,

[01:08:14] you want to dance for a living?

[01:08:15] That's cute,

[01:08:16] but let's get a real job.

[01:08:17] Like all that stuff we kind of grew up with,

[01:08:19] like it's there too.

[01:08:20] So you still kind of connect and you feel seen,

[01:08:22] you know,

[01:08:22] sorry.

[01:08:23] And that is,

[01:08:23] it has a great feel at the end of it.

[01:08:26] It's a great sitcom.

[01:08:27] It has like four or five seasons.

[01:08:28] So it's worth watching.

[01:08:29] There you go.

[01:08:30] There you go.

[01:08:30] To my Rex for this week,

[01:08:32] murder and then love,

[01:08:35] which,
