[00:00:00] Que ondas, primos, primas y primas? Welcome to my, my primos, my primos, my PIMOS podcast My name is Freddy. My name is Kevin Garcia. My name is Elia Maria Matriz

[00:00:11] Well, this is Shikumet whenever I can make it. My Primos Podcast discusses all things fandom and pop culture from comics movies to whatever obsession we have this week, but with the Latine Latine Latine perspective

[00:00:24] Remember we're all primos. We're all primas. We're all primos no matter what part of the world we're from But he's just like ecstatic, you know running around It's funny. I've never experienced those because I grew up in South Central, right?

[00:00:38] And I grew up with like in this crazy group with like Rotwilers and pit bulls and people fighting dogs sadly like I just grew up in that element, you know and Police dogs and canines, but they were just always seen like these morose mean-looking things, right?

[00:00:52] But when I've never had a dog like actually like live in the home and like experience that whole idea of them living with indoors with you Right? I'm talking like he has a personality that he like will take a running start from outside and

[00:01:05] Slide on our floor like like he loves like slide on the floor and like slam into stuff and run around and like just go crazy And then when they stop he's like, you know, they got never experienced that. It's fun. It's fun. So

[00:01:18] Yeah, I have three cats and I had cats growing up But like now that I'm an adult I'm like, okay I can see that they have they're distinct personalities kind of crazy They're everywhere and I got my thing with cats. We'll talk about

[00:01:31] Everybody else has a cap of me. I have a 19 year old cat and she's in the other man sleeping so Still here we go Primos primas and primas and welcome to my primos podcast

[00:01:45] My name is Freddy and with me tonight is my primo and yours mr. Kevin Garcia calm Say what's up Kevin? What's up Kevin as usual you can't have a show without mr. Kevin Garcia

[00:01:56] We tried it without it a bit and it just didn't feel right. Yeah, you know what you're right You're that you're that missing piece remember me be the Kevin Garcia in your life everybody

[00:02:08] It can't be that hard literally it cannot be that hard to get a Kevin Garcia like shirt right here another voice I hear Of course of course back again surviving the North Texas blackouts again creations herself You made it

[00:02:33] It's always nice to when you say yours, I don't know what it is. Hey You know she doesn't interrupt the the intros anymore No, but the other thing I didn't get better and because you got better it makes me look worse But you know what a

[00:02:49] Rundle applause for Elias intro last episode it was like Super super good. I was like man I gotta watch her. I was like I could have done it for the job But you inspired me But tonight we also have a very special guest

[00:03:06] We're excited to have on the show. We're all fans of her work We're so happy get you know, she can join us here today Kevin Garcia. Who do we have on this show today? well During quarantine I was stuck at home a lot

[00:03:21] Okay, and I had heard from my students about webtoon So I started going through it and I got hooked on a lot of comics And one of the ones that actually started just before 2020 Was kiss bet and I just got really really

[00:03:35] involved in this in this love story, you know kind of fun comic and Then at staple independent media expo here in Austin I ran into the artist in grid ocho and I said please be on our podcast. You're so cool

[00:03:51] Ingrid thank you for joining us. Thank you. Thank you for having me It's such an honor and I'm so happy that I ran into you Kevin on on the Yeah, it was so fun. Yeah

[00:04:03] Kevin's a ping-pong ball of a man running between every convention in the Southwest. I promise you like He's everywhere especially when it comes to you know He's filling that hole everybody I need that shirt and I need something Now this is Kevin's filling that hole. Yeah

[00:04:24] Make it happen I need some fan art Kevin fills the hole somehow something We need I still need my tingle wait wait I'm working on it. I'm working on it. We're glad you're here and

[00:04:39] We want to talk to you a little bit about that that comic specifically, but also about your art in general So just real quickly How did you get into art? Well, I've been doing it since I think around age 17

[00:04:56] I got more serious about it because before that I loved writing and I would like Write all all my stories. I had typewriter. I told the story a billion times But I had a typewriter at school a class of mech anografia

[00:05:11] That's what we would call it. I went to high school in Honduras and I would like a typewriter class yeah, I typed my stories and I would get like thick Stories like that and I would share with my classmates and everyone was like reading each episode

[00:05:29] And then I was like, man, I like I really suck at Like writing like I had all these ideas and stories But like I just couldn't put into words

[00:05:39] I was like, oh, I just wish I could put my vision across like I have this vision that I can imagine Clearly in my storyline, but I don't know how to tell it really good with words Like I'm just not gonna describing things and then

[00:05:53] I was like, maybe if I can just draw it I have his pictures in my head and if I can just like draw it I will be able to like show exactly what I'm thinking And I thought myself how to draw and then that's how I was born

[00:06:07] But it all came from like my love of storytelling and just like wanting to get those stories out there So yeah, that's mostly how I got started So you which is going on do that. Did you grow up in Honduras?

[00:06:20] Stop I've lived all over the place. I I was born and raised in Monterrey, Mexico And when I was 14 years old my parents moved to Honduras for work So I went to high school there for like three years or yeah, three years and then I finished my school

[00:06:36] In Utah where I live right now. But yeah, I went there for like three years and hundreds. It was the best I love it Central America is the best right way better Yeah, so you know the best, you know just we know we need more

[00:06:53] Naked okay, I'm gonna claim you okay fellow Central American right here, but you know reading I've read kiss bet and I haven't gone as far as they have Although they're gonna gush over it here, but I really do It's fun though, but it's it's

[00:07:11] When you see something like this in front of you there are two two paths, right? When you look at a comic series that's running so long or at least so many episodes you go Oh, there's a lot to read here

[00:07:20] But on the other side is like oh this is good I have a lot to read like you get so excited with your work and I want to just kind of sing praises to it I'm about chapter 24 give or take

[00:07:31] And I'm like right in the middle of close to chapter 190. You're really close But I want to just ask you because I'm reading this and I'm telling my wife about it Hey, you should read this because she loves like boys over flowers

[00:07:46] You know the k-dramas and she loves you know everything growing a show hole kind of like show hope each used to read that magazine And stuff and she's like oh this is awesome

[00:07:54] She just falls right into it has that been the genre that you just kind of connected the most with or has this kind of Gradually got in you there and or had the we said you had images. Is this kind of where it always was?

[00:08:05] Yeah, no, I think I've always been drawn to like the show Joe type of romance and I Grew up watching those like boys over flowers all those k-dramas and things and then the telenovelas well

[00:08:21] Yeah, when you're making it do you see yourself making like a show Joe manga or do you see yourself making a telenova? I think a mixture. I think I'm very influenced by all of them and I think that's why I get that I

[00:08:38] Mean I don't know if you've noticed but a bunch of the names in my story are kind of like Asian Yeah, us like like more American eyes because when I wrote my story I

[00:08:52] Had just moved back from Taiwan. I lived there for like a couple years doing a service mission for church and I was still very influenced by all the Asian stuff and And like I said, I love watching k-dramas and Japanese dramas and Taiwanese dramas

[00:09:11] And so then I chose a bunch of those like last things being a little bit Asian So I'm like my story is super influenced by all these things that I've had growing up and

[00:09:21] So when you read the story, you don't really know where it's based because it's like And to be fair like people that don't know what we're talking about What is the like elevator pitch of kiss bet? So those I don't know

[00:09:34] So the story is about it's like a high school romance That centers on Sarah Lynn, which is my main girl character And she's going through high school and she hasn't had her first kiss yet

[00:09:46] And this story begins with her and her best friends doing a bet where her best friend says Well, you haven't kissed anyone. I bet you wouldn't like go ask that random guy

[00:09:56] So you can get it over with at the subway station. So she goes to the guy and she's about to ask him and It's like all these awkward tension

[00:10:06] He wakes up as the subway comes and then the rest of the story is just them keep running into each other as They had this awkward moment at the beginning

[00:10:15] And so it's this coming-of-age story about Sarah Lynn growing to high school and trying to get her first kiss and yeah Oh, it's her life experiences as a young girl growing up and learning Falling in love multiple times It's so good

[00:10:33] Look at it is what you just said right now was that like it was It's hard to tell where it is sometimes and it does kind of feel like it could be anywhere But when you when I saw that the the last names like you said most

[00:10:47] Webtoons start in Korea right in South Korea So they have a lot of there's a lot of popular webtoons that are written in Korea And these aren't necessarily Korean names, but I was just still like I

[00:10:57] Kind of thought maybe it was and so when I met you and you said that that you were originally from Mexico that I was like Wow, I had no idea

[00:11:05] And I was reminded of another webtoon the four of us where wasn't I was reading halfway through it that I realized the crater was from Argentina And I was like oh, that's why these references and this and this and this

[00:11:15] That's because she'd written it in Spanish and it translated English and there were some things that translated weird That's why that's why I picked up on it On yours. Do you write it in Spanish? Do you write it in English?

[00:11:24] Do you write it with Korean webtoons in mind? I write it in English mostly because it's what I speak the most now that I live in the US and I started writing it in English but

[00:11:38] Sometimes I write some chapters in Spanish and then I'm like only I have to translate this into English because I have to upload It in English, but I mostly write it in English. Yeah

[00:11:48] Hey, what did you think about the book? I know you're like you want as far as spending money? I did So yeah, so when Kevin spent the lake I had a bookmark and I finally like had a weekend that I was like

[00:12:06] Finally I get to sit down and read this comic. I no joke. I got to like chapter 110 the first day I couldn't put my phone down. I kept reading and reading and reading and I finally was like, okay I got to get some sleep

[00:12:20] Um, and then the next day I I pick it back up and read because it's my day off work And so I I'm I'm hooked. I'm so hooked on this story. I grew up reading a lot of shoujo manga

[00:12:31] I see I see influences of a lot of it I definitely want to ask you like your inspirations from it But um, no, I got to the the last free chapter saw that there were like four that you could read and I was like

[00:12:45] In the way that it left off where where the free chapters were I'm like, I need to know I need to know I don't do micro transactions But I bought those last four chapters so quickly

[00:12:56] Because I had to know I had you know when it supports the arts. It's a micro transaction for yeah, no Exactly. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it goes directly to me. So thank you Yeah, but I I'm very curious like what um, what like what titles uh,

[00:13:12] Shoujo or any sort of comic manga do you draw inspiration from because I did see like some References throughout the whole thing that I'm like, oh that looks like this. That looks like that Yeah, um my early influences are definitely like Sakura card captor um

[00:13:30] Inuyasha, Ranma one half like all those classics that were in kanal cinco in Mexico Oh my gosh, yes. Yeah I was gonna say I love how ramna half came out in the u.s. And it was popular

[00:13:46] But it is so big in mexico like everywhere in the 90s of mexico watched it Yeah, yeah under estimate how manga and anime is just so huge in mexico, you know other parts of the world Yeah Yeah, I also grew up

[00:14:00] I have like a a bunch of collections of manga that I grew up reading like a bunch of them or like Hanakimi and often when I read this Have like all the volumes and I have just a ton but yeah Otello

[00:14:16] Mermoli board just a bunch of those like oh, yeah 90s and I love like the 90s feel of those Manga's and so I kind of wanted to bring a little bit of that style back

[00:14:29] It's not super in my head. Like I think it kind of is but I don't know how much. No. Yeah Actually Cuz I just I'm very nostalgic for that kind of feel so kind of try and write in that

[00:14:44] Style that I remember reading and yeah, it's a lot of fun for me. I love it No, I think that it's it's really it's a lot of fun And you know, the people out there that are listening just go check it out Go check out webtoons

[00:14:58] Go check out Ingrid's works called kiss bet But we're gonna keep talking about it when talking about You know moving forward because when I read the book when I read these stories, right? Like I think the draw to show is that it is

[00:15:09] I don't want to call it slice of life because it's very dramatic, right? Because you still get you know, you still get the oh my god moments, right those those Teen like oh shit moment, you know and like

[00:15:19] As even as a male reading these I'm like, oh my god Like I was there that that that that um nervousness that that wants that that feeling of you know Pining over somebody, you know and even the male characters

[00:15:30] Know that in these right they show that in the kiss bet even to they're showing that oh Hey, there's a lighter side to it. There's a more Open mind of her more heartfelt, you know because growing up latino you don't do that, you know

[00:15:41] You're you're always tough machista. Nope. You don't cry. You don't no let the girl pine over you, you know and Let's be honest me they're pretty boys too like like like in the sense that they're not Yeah, I was drawn with that machismo in mind that they're Yeah

[00:16:03] You don't have to ask you can use my image and Despite being on tiktok, I never get the regular trends So There you go. There you go. I can use my image But yeah, I mean how the community behind your work has been awesome online

[00:16:31] Like we see people doing tons of fan art and just really Loving on your characters and your story. How's that been? Did you were you first of all?

[00:16:40] Nobody sets out right thinking I was just gonna blow up how it did, you know, but it has a huge following How do you feel where it's taking you? Yeah, I'm really surprised every day when I keep Seeing that people keep coming back

[00:16:55] In my head. I'm like, well, this is just my cheesy little story that I was doing for fun but I I didn't expect the hype and I Certainly didn't expect the numbers and and yeah

[00:17:06] I'm really grateful that there's so many people that can connect or relate because I think that's the funnest part for me because I I write all these stories with Uh The mind of like trying to put my feelings out there and like Like get peoples to relate

[00:17:22] um and connect and so to be able to Get those messages of fans telling me like oh like I really remember going through something so similar and like This helped me to make my decision with this and that and I'm like

[00:17:35] Yeah, like that's how I felt when I was trying to make some decisions that I was like, should I choose like this path or that path? like how do I Push through when I'm having this type of struggle and

[00:17:47] I know it's a romance, but I do put a lot of my Feelings like struggling with school and all those things So just being able to see how people have connected with the same type of challenges. It's really fun for me Yeah, I love it

[00:18:02] Do any of the situations and this is something that that freddy was wondering earlier. Do any of the situations come from your own life? Um like was there a moment on a subway with the blanket?

[00:18:12] You had to kind of follow through it. I mean i'm just a i'm a fan so remember to get it with I'm not necessarily like exactly and But I think a lot of the characters are influenced by people that i've

[00:18:26] That i've known or still currently know like my best friends They have my my little group of my best friends Which like I have my patrick and I have my vicky and and I had my subway boy, you know

[00:18:38] And my my joe, you know, so all of them represent people in my life that I've like connected with and Like my dad and things like that. So I would say most of the characters are very influenced with decisions

[00:18:51] Or not decisions, but like people in my life that helped me Make decisions. I don't know. Yeah It's very real, but not out of the same thing. Yeah, I love the dad so much. He's so fun So I I want to ask um

[00:19:08] With with webtoon what made you like choose webtoon instead of like just going full print right off the bat Which I I'm I figure like if you ever want to print this people will definitely line up for sure. Yeah for the platform webtoon yeah, well

[00:19:23] Webtoon was awesome because anybody could submit their comics there and you immediately get like All the people that are channeling through there So I didn't have to like create another website and figure out how to get people coming to me

[00:19:39] So I really recommend webtoon to any creator that's Beginning their comics because they have canvas section which anybody can submit their comics and that helped me a ton um And I I started in around 2017. I believe when I started person meeting comics, so

[00:19:57] I think it was like the biggest platform at the time for me to submit comics And I didn't know I was gonna get this big at the time And also I got really lucky because there wasn't a lot of stuff back then

[00:20:10] So I really took off in the past four years. Yeah. Yeah, I think I if I would have started now I don't know that I would have gained What I I think yeah, I think I just got really lucky But but I'm grateful

[00:20:25] Yeah, no, it's really cool. I love so I'm new to webtoon I I haven't used webtoon before I read this comic and I think it's just really cool to have that feature

[00:20:34] Where you have that community like at the end of each comic there's a comment section and you just see everyone go Like reacting everyone talking to each other. That's just so cool. I love that. It's like a community-based platform for you to share your work and

[00:20:48] Yeah, I was just like this is awesome. I love this Yeah, I love reading the comments so fun Comments are blast, you know you start thinking hey, yeah, it's the same thing, you know, but um You know with with making this comic. I mean obviously

[00:21:06] What other what other books or what other stories you have out there that people can look forward to as well Is there anything coming out or is there something already out that we can kind of look at as well in the meantime?

[00:21:15] Um, I don't have anything finished like I'm the type of person who would start a million comics Like if you dig me which don't but I feel like that applies to everybody here Yeah

[00:21:29] Yeah, I think I think we all have done that until we find something that really clicks and For me was the kiss bed. But before that I started like So many comics that I would submit online. I like on dvnr

[00:21:42] I would it was this old web page called drunk duck where I would like submit a bunch of Comics and then there was no one smack jeevs just a bunch of I have so many Yeah, and then I have a few on webtoon that I submitted

[00:21:59] Um, but they're still there if you search my name you can read like I have like a few chapters on Yeah, I was just I was just looking right here. There's that one called in your dreams. What about hey arnold? Oh, yeah What is that?

[00:22:13] I didn't know if I popped it up or not We need more of them honestly I did like a fan comic with that But I was writing with a friend and she would help me write it and then I would

[00:22:26] Draw them and submit them on dvnr and then they went A little bit viral. I think that was my first thing that got like kind of big at the time And I still get so many messages and dms for people that are like, can you please finish that?

[00:22:40] Hey, I don't store you like oh sure and I'm like, I mean there's still a big following I feel like that's a kind of that that should be done on like like Instagram or something because people love those fan comics there. Oh, yeah

[00:22:53] You know what's interesting is you said you started in like 2017. I guess I'm here 2016 and um Often I'll I'll go one thing I like about webtoons Or just web comics in general is that I can go back and see the evolution of somebody's art

[00:23:06] And I your evolution in like four years was a lot You have you have a very solid style now and it's interesting seeing like I'm looking back at the early ones and it's good But it's like it's still it's evolved a lot. That's pretty interesting

[00:23:19] Did you have a lot of other influences from like fellow webtoon creators or any advice from them or or Tips that moved you along so I think uh, I didn't get any specific advice because I didn't all our

[00:23:31] webtoon creators. I mean, I don't know any webtoon creators at the time but um I had some people that I would follow and I would be like, oh like I really Want to see how these people are doing it. And so I would try to copy like

[00:23:45] What was successful at the time? Like what gained them a following? And so I would just notice like the things they would do like they were very consistent. They had like stuff coming up like Every week at this time

[00:24:01] And so I was like making sure to do that so that I had people coming back, you know and and then um Yeah, I would make shorter Episodes so that I could upload more consistently and also I did something weird is at the beginning

[00:24:16] The first time I uploaded the kiss bit. I just did sketches I was like, I'm just gonna focus on this story Which before I was doing like full color like trying to make it look the best and like focusing on

[00:24:29] Like the art but this time I was like I just want to move the story along so I'm just gonna focus on Just writing my story and I just did a bunch of sketches and I submitted A bunch of episodes over one summer

[00:24:43] And I think that's how people got into it because they were like, oh, I just want to see what happens So I started some meeting like every day, which is like really obsessive for my part

[00:24:53] But I super into it and I was having a fun. I was like, oh, I just want to see what happens myself because I write um I didn't really plan the whole story

[00:25:05] I would just like kind of improv the story as it went along which I still do that a lot I have like an end goal in mind where I

[00:25:13] Want to go but the way I get there is I just kind of like you're hinting at an ending, huh? Yeah Yeah, and Kevin Lulu ends up with Oliver Because I I heard that newspaper comics

[00:25:30] Creators will have to be like several weeks ahead just to make sure they don't fall behind Do you do that or are you like finishing the episode right before it publishes? Um, no, I am very much week by week

[00:25:43] Um, sadly as the only way I can work the pressure the pressure keeps it going That's fair. I know that feeling exactly Yeah Kevin Garcia calm and his all the work he's doing and the comic book that's when does it do?

[00:25:57] So it says on the Kickstarter that it'll be ready by august My plan was to have it ready by the last day of may but it's almost the last day of may and I don't have it ready yet

[00:26:05] But it's it's it's it's happened. I was delayed by school. I was delayed by school I'm I the last week of the last month rather of of the year is always tough I'm gonna leave comments on your Kickstarter

[00:26:18] We're exactly wait wait for the comments section because that's gonna be live So anyway back to your story Um, but yeah, we've been following along. Uh, freddy said he's at chapter 20. I'm at the last free chapter

[00:26:32] I I admit I rarely have done the coin thing except when there was some kind of promotion for it um, but Yours is the only comic that I am up to date on that is currently that's currently publishing Um, and and ellie has jumped ahead a little bit

[00:26:46] Um, but uh, did you always plan to have Like those same main characters from the beginning like you knew that that that sarah and oliver and and oliver's brother You know, they were all gonna be important or they just kind of like what if he has a brother?

[00:27:00] Did you just do that as you're going on? um, no, I think from the very beginning I kind of like had already imagined the Like the the drama ships. Yeah Kind of kind of I kind of figure out the drama as we went along

[00:27:16] But I kind of knew that I wanted This tension thing going on between sarah and oliver and also this thing at the beginning with patrick, which is Very influenced by my real life at the time, which my real life patrick

[00:27:32] There was just a bunch of stuff going on internally that i'm trying to figure out and It's all resolved now, which Spoiler we didn't end up together No, no, I've had one of those as well

[00:27:46] That's what I think is so cool about this. That was something kevin like we've all read these and go man I was I was that character at that one time we've all been

[00:27:53] Everybody in the story, you know what? I mean, we were the ones that were just completely oblivious We were the ones that were completely obsessed. We're the ones that were just kind of like Hanging on, you know, I mean everybody's been in one of these roles

[00:28:05] Which is why you said yourself that you didn't expect for everybody to kind of connect with everybody But you do because everybody is these characters at some point in their lives Like i'm reading this and i'm like man, I had a friend

[00:28:17] Now she's like you said I have a friend now. She's still a good friend of mine California that we had a thing like that where And just putting out there's nothing at this point. We're so far removed from it

[00:28:26] But it was something along the lines of a very good friend of mine. I didn't grow up any brothers I have sisters um, and I have my friend became like a brother and The last year I graduated junior high

[00:28:39] We actually moved around the corner from my best friend's house So we were able to like, you know hang out together And high school came around right we have that high school time What have you and then a girl came along that

[00:28:50] We both kind of had the thing for but she had eyes for him And I was the friend and then I was kind of teetering in between both

[00:28:58] Like hey, that's my friend and that's a girl that I like and then at one point she we and her were like Because they were having issues and then I was there and then I was like, I don't want to you know

[00:29:07] It was just so back and forth. It was one of the other thing right and eventually even like we kind of went like well, you know what I even like drama Yeah, we got to talk Ingrid are you taking notes for the next

[00:29:24] All this stuff like you're like Like You're gonna be all over I'm sorry. It's just how that works but Point is it was to a point where I remember the scene vividly. It's like a movie. It was like He had kind of shunned her

[00:29:42] And she was like so emotional and I was like the friend and I was like The reason the reason it's not working is because you need to be with me And then she was like And then we kissed

[00:29:56] And then it got weird and then we like didn't talk for weeks and then Life moved forward they made up. I was still the friend and years later we looked back and go like that was that was High school, you know, like it was

[00:30:14] And that happened, but yeah, you can use it, you know Maybe maybe some webtoon coins my way, you know, but besides that You Off of that like everybody everybody here Um, who is a character that like you were late to the most and then who's your favorite character?

[00:30:33] Okay, Kevin Or you're asking everybody this question. Sorry. Yeah Um Shoot. Well, I guess I like I said well, I've probably been Um I don't know. Um, my favorite character lately has been been lulu and and after that sky strangely enough

[00:30:52] Because I just I just think they're really neat characters even though they're they're not in most of the episodes Whenever they do show up something interesting happens Uh, so those are probably my favorites

[00:31:02] Um, I I've definitely I've definitely been patrick at some point in my life. I'm sure Um, you know, so there's that uh, but But overall I just I don't know. I I really get into the when it comes to webtoons

[00:31:16] I really get into like the romance and the soap operas of it and I just I just love that Uh, how about you guys who's which character do you connect with or is your favorite? I'm patrick the guy just I was that friend

[00:31:30] That was that that guy that was kind of like always teetering between like Like it was as an adult. It's obvious, you know That there's something there that we want to just jolt. That's why you mess with her. That's why you're around. That's why you're still

[00:31:45] Kindhearted enough to kind of find I'll help you yet. It's fine Like, you know, you're still at the asshole at times, but you're also like You you teeter between that brotherly love yet. There's hoping for more

[00:31:57] Um, and I do like lulu. I think it was hilarious. I love her vibe. Like I just want I just want to like hang out with her Like that is that that is one hang out Same

[00:32:07] But I I just love I get to earlier like everyone's kind of been somebody in this and when I read the story I was like man, like I felt for patrick. I was like shit like yeah, yeah, man. I'm only at 20 20. I don't know. Yeah, what happens after

[00:32:24] I just looked it up. I met since sky she shows up in episode 42 Okay, she's cute I uh, I I see myself too much in oliver because I was very much like focus on studies Romance isn't my thing. I don't want to get involved

[00:32:44] But but i'm a scorpio so of course i'm gonna get involved No, I love I love oliver's character and I I felt a lot of like what he feels in terms of like saying strong for the sake of You know his situation um

[00:33:01] So yeah, I see a lot of myself in him But yeah, no lulu and dad It's a tie between them too because like they're not like the main characters But they make a presence like like if they're there you're like, okay

[00:33:14] Look at their the comic from the drama, but also helping move the story along. Um, I really love them so much Do you have a favorite character to yeah, it's like she was like what your favorite did

[00:33:27] But because like like I mean you said already that you kind of associate with sarah But I mean like in terms of like oh, I love drawing this character. I love writing this character's dialogue I'm gonna guess if you're so far

[00:33:36] I maybe lulu because she seems like the most fun to like play with Yeah, lulu is fun because I can like say any cryptic old thing Yeah, um, but I think I love playing with patrick like I think you like their character from the beginning because I just

[00:33:56] I have my you know my silly side that I just I get to put it all in him Just any dumb thing like he can just say it, you know

[00:34:05] I love the class. I like when they go all chibi to chibi too. Yeah. Oh, I love the chibi sides. Like they're so cute They're fun and easy to draw

[00:34:15] Fair when I'm like, oh, I don't I don't want to draw a whole panel. I can just go chibi It's still cute How close to Dad right talk about that how close to your dad was is this dad in the story?

[00:34:27] I mean you said you pulled a lot from that from people, you know Is that was there a lot there from your father? um, yes, like I my dad was always

[00:34:39] pushed me not pushed me but like supported me and like my passions and my work and I think I owed a lot to I owe a lot to him to be where I am today because

[00:34:50] Even though there was like a moment at the beginning where I was like trying to choose If I wanted to go into comics full-time or not he was like Really think about it because there's no going back and I was like, I know but I

[00:35:04] I really want this Um, he bought me my first ipad, you know, he He helped me pay for my school when I was going to college I'm really grateful for that and and I I studied art, which I know a lot of parents aren't super

[00:35:20] Supportive when their children decided to go into art. And so I'm very grateful that he was very supportive and really believed in me and even from when I was younger and I was like

[00:35:29] I don't know if I I'm good enough at art. He would be like, yes, I can see it like you're you're really good and Yeah, so I I love that influence that he's had on me

[00:35:40] And I really look up to him for that and I feel like I I I put a lot of that into my comic to show The the nice relationship between the father father and the daughter and I do have a mom

[00:35:52] So I lent them to him and I again the story is not about me You know, honestly, I find myself Hair is kind of like the same way as stars and I was like

[00:36:00] When I'm writing I often do single parents just so I have less characters to write lazy writing Kevin Garcia This is the man we kick started a comic book for everybody But when I'm doing like middle grade stories and stuff for the smaller kids

[00:36:15] Um, let me ask you a question though. Um Your dad did he ever like have a preference of which boy he wanted you to end up with was that something? Oh, yeah, I noticed the dad does that a lot in this comic

[00:36:26] Yes, yes, my dad has always been like Oh, I like this guy. I'm like, oh, I don't like that guy And I think from the beginning you can see the dad kind of hating on Patrick Again, that was yeah

[00:36:38] That was that was my dad every time with my real life Patrick would be like oh you're hanging a little bit too much This guy like um, well watch out All right Oh, whatever But yeah, he's still

[00:36:54] He's a he was a boy. Remember like I was a boy when I was just a friend once You know, like That's how it started. So my wife

[00:37:02] I don't want to be her friend when I first started dating her like hey, I don't want to be your friend Like up front. I was like I do not want to be your friend because I got

[00:37:09] I was I was best friend for too long with every note that I fell into that loop and I'm like But I like you You're gonna be involved

[00:37:18] And I don't want to be your friend. She's like what? I'm like, yeah, so I wore her down and worked 20 years strong Is There you go, right I love how people uh connect with the comic and connect with their own life

[00:37:33] We were talking a little bit earlier about your background and where the comic is kind of like inspired by different things Do you imagine it in a specific location? Um, like like oh, it's definitely new york or it's tokyo or something like that or

[00:37:45] For that matter i'm looking at your website in grid comics.com and there's some adorable pictures Of the kids dressed in chadro outfits, which i'm like, I didn't know I needed that but I need that now Yeah

[00:37:59] Go ahead. No, no, I was just saying so so where do you see it being said? Yeah, um, it's Like I said when I first started the story I was moving back from taiwan and so I Really envisioned it in a city like because I lived in

[00:38:13] Taipei for a couple years and I just love the city life. Um I wouldn't say that it's in taiwan or taipei, but it's definitely a Mixed a melgoma. I'm like a like a yeah, yeah, okay made up world

[00:38:31] It's like in mexico with taiwan and but can we say she's a latina heroine? There you go. Yeah, there you go. We need more latina heroines right mom. We haven't seen she's from montere Yeah New cannon update the wiki updated

[00:38:53] No, I looked when I was when I was learning about the you know the comic or anything like there is a fan wiki Like a very detailed fan wiki Whoa, that's how you know you've made it Right

[00:39:05] Like how did you find out did they anybody contact you or just searched it one day and you're like, um, there's a wiki with bicomic I think someone sent it to me. I can't remember

[00:39:14] Yeah, they sent it to me and I was like what oh wait, how do they know all of this detailed information? about me and the characters You know what I wonder

[00:39:26] I've actually known some artists that have gone back to their wikis and use that to keep track of the story Do you do that? Do you ever go back and be like wait, did these two characters meet and you go back to the wiki and you find it?

[00:39:36] No, I I haven't Done that. That's a good idea. Yeah But Yeah, I have to go back and read my story which I haven't done very much and I think I should do more so I'm more consistent

[00:39:51] But it's really how they recommended. It's a good comic. It's a great comic. You don't want to spend some coin on it too I don't know about when you said that it comes to mind when I I don't know if I'm alone on it

[00:40:03] Right. You said you didn't go but you haven't gone back and read it but Do you go back and read your stuff like after a while when I feel like When I've put it to bed like oh this is done

[00:40:13] I don't pick it up anymore. I think I feel like I've left it like It's done It's out there in the world and I don't need to go back to I kind of just go off the dome and I go and then I like yeah I remember

[00:40:24] Adding that like thank you. I guess that's me. I don't know but Is am I the only one or do you really go back and really look at your work? How often do you do that? um, I I've only read the full story like fully like maybe

[00:40:40] Twice because again, it's really long and it it took me like two or three days to read the whole thing but I really enjoyed it. It's kind of I don't know if it's that good damn

[00:40:54] But what I mean is I write it for a reason like I write it because this type of stuff I enjoy And so I I think it's kind of fun

[00:41:03] There's of course a bunch of episodes that I'm like, this is so cringe. I wish I could delete these and never Have them here again She's like no everything matters. Everything's canon keep it

[00:41:14] Yeah, I could see you I could see you going in and being like oh, I hope they end up together wait. That's my job It's happened to me sometimes where I'm like, oh, I kind of wish

[00:41:25] I kind of just want to read it. I don't want to have to think of a solution to this major problem I created myself Because then you get it wrapped up in there and we're like, oh man, I could change this maybe

[00:41:36] I'm like, uh, no, I can't go back now. Can I 190 issues? You know go back and change something, you know, but hey, you never know I don't know But I like I dig where it is. It was so far you they're way ahead of me

[00:41:50] So I know they have questions They wanted they wanted a kind of like hey, is there hinting at stuff? I know they have questions So I'm gonna leave it to them because I'm just kind of back here I don't mind spoilers because I'm still gonna read it. So

[00:42:00] Yeah, I don't want to spoil too much because honestly as someone who read through it and quickly The ride is so enjoyable. I think the ride is so enjoyable I do have a question

[00:42:10] But of course you do not have to answer if you like don't know or don't want to How many chapters do you think the series will have?

[00:42:21] Or how many seasons at the very least or seasons? Yeah, I have no idea because like I said, I write just by this See that like you have an end goal, but you're like, I'm still enjoying your pants. So you get there Yeah, yeah, yeah

[00:42:36] I haven't done that pants. So he doesn't have that problem It's not covered anymore I wore even though when I was teaching high school from a distance, I got fully dressed every single day

[00:42:51] I mean, I did wear sandals medication, but other than that, I was fully dressed every day. So I was proud of myself That's good. I would never dare to have any Yeah Especially when you're a teacher It's true. It's true. So is it so big spoiler question

[00:43:09] Is it true that that sarah is the princess of the saturday and empire not get ash one of mess with friday? What we go to space comes in with a steel chair Joe versus patrick, okay, I will say I since I I've read up to the bonus chapters

[00:43:29] I love where it's going and I don't have no idea how it's gonna end up But I love that and it makes me want more. So I like I don't know. I love the ride

[00:43:38] I love the ride that we're on. I don't I don't care if it's one more chapter. I don't care if it's 10 more chapters I'm I'm hooked. I'm so hooked Good, good That'd be like diabolical that you're like, that's it. I'm tapped out. That's the For watching dead what?

[00:44:01] It is golden. I imagine it's just like you sarah's waking up from a dream and you're like, oh, that was crazy People would lose their minds. Yeah, and it would be apocalypse all along. Oh my god. Have you had have you had like angry fans?

[00:44:18] Come at you. Yes, or maybe two excited fans. Oh, you have had any me please Yeah, I've had like people be haters and be like, oh I hated how you did this or that but especially like um recently I had a bunch of like

[00:44:34] It wasn't that bad, but I had a bunch of people like DM me personally and be like I'm really disappointed in the direction of the story they were taking and I was like, okay Wow, sorry My goodness, but it's okay because it all worked out in the end

[00:45:00] Is it just people trying to ship other characters? Is that what it is? Yeah, I mean once you get to about episode in the 90s, you'll You'll see what I mean, but damn it. You guys are just spoiled it If you get there, I will

[00:45:16] I'm in trust me Friday. You're gonna be on board, but I I immediately where the story went I I was like, you know what? No, no, no. I'm trust in the process trust in the process and it's yeah, it's really good

[00:45:28] Yeah, it just gets a little bit dramatic A little world I'm off for it We talked about excited fans haven't gotten to the festival, right? No When you said the festival of having flashbacks out of that story Wow

[00:45:44] He's gonna like the season one finale, I think oh, yeah Oh, I was gag. I was angered. I'm gonna DM you watch just just why I run the pre-most podcast Account so when I get a DM from me

[00:45:57] And you get that big that emoji with the bit like that's the reason Rying on your phone like oh I do like that one Looking forward to it But you had fans, uh, you know commenting on stuff we talked earlier about fan art

[00:46:16] Have you seen any fan art that either either really impressed you or you were like, oh, I can't believe they drew that Oh, yeah, I love everything that the fans do. I love just watching my stuff and someone else

[00:46:27] In someone else's style. I feel like it makes it More real because these are just like characters in my head that I made up that I still feel like they're not like I mean they're real to me but like

[00:46:40] Doesn't feel like I don't know what makes any sense. Yeah And Ellie and I were talking earlier about how all the fan art we've seen is very wholesome, which isn't always the case

[00:46:48] It seems like a very very wholesome fandom too. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean there's some stuff out there that I'm like Still the the internet is You've made it you've made it we talked about it with other creators

[00:47:00] We're like, hey if you see your stuff on that side of the fence, you're like, okay, you've arrived You know Right World War comics are x-rating version. Oh, right Kevin I believe it. I believe it It's not like domain, right? I mean the original characters are yeah

[00:47:23] I mean admittedly the costumes that I designed are copyrighted to me, but if you could drew them without costumes, I guess Whoa Well, yeah, I'm just happy everyone. I was like a web comic exclusive. Mr. Kevin Garcia dot com

[00:47:36] If only there was somebody we knew that did spiced Elias Trations Spicy stuff. I mean, are we coming across? Well, it's not it's not February because Ellie does celebrate fall like February That's always fun

[00:47:48] They haven't heard of this in grid. It's a great holiday holiday season which uh, so for the record in grid I always keep it clean as a teacher. These guys are under no obligation to do so We're It's not any role Okay

[00:48:05] Share about your phallic February is fun every February, um I do uh an art challenge with my my streaming community Where they have to draw something phallic without drawing the actual phallic Object itself. So it's like two apples and a banana

[00:48:22] Decoratively placed, you know stuff like that. It's like make make art from that But it can't you can't have it like inappropriate. So I can't draw so I take pictures I take pictures and stuff. So I arrange them and I'm like

[00:48:37] Okay, I see it, you know, and that's that's what I do because I can't draw But I just love I love doing silly stuff like that because I'm again. I'm not a romantic. I'm not

[00:48:46] Anything like that. I'm like all over kind of a little bit though. Oliver's character growth. I will say, you know But oh, hey, but no I love I love doing silly stuff like that for romantic events. So No, but there's something to be said about

[00:49:02] Like Kevin said right it's wholesome right because yeah the internet gets the point you get saturated with just The darkness the evil stuff and like they're like, whoa, like okay, we're adults there It's there. There's an audience for cool, right? Hey, whatever. I have fun

[00:49:15] But there's something to be said about like for example your work, right? It it it hits at the right chord because you're not you're not over you're not overdoing it You're not you're not putting your characters in situations that would make someone feel like damn

[00:49:28] Like I grew up like I was I connected with them and now they're doing something way off character and which I mean characters change But we're talking never being explicit. I guess is what I'm getting at right because it's very easy nowadays and in the time

[00:49:41] We're living to just Be okay with that, you know, and it's it's fine. There's no stories can be told but There is a little bit of finesse when it comes to these stories and it's it's the subtlety

[00:49:52] Which connects to the reality, right? I don't know if that there's any saying like that but that subtlety there is now that Let me have a t-shirt quote freddy no Kevin fills the hole But uh, there's no subtlety there Um

[00:50:09] But what i'm getting at is I really enjoy the writing and especially that you write and you know the artwork is great too But it just blends really well and is I right?

[00:50:17] Yeah, you know, but that's what I take away from it like some people go towards the art first and the story I go for the story first and The the way it's written the way the characters are so far for me, you know

[00:50:27] I think there's just that realism with that hint of that cheese, right that cheesiness So you just kind of like sometimes you crave that cheese, you know, we'll watch those me and my wife will watch

[00:50:35] Some cheesy movie and we're okay. This is cheese and we just like cringe and this is this is what we wanted You know, so I really like what you've done and I'm not just you know

[00:50:45] Blowing you up. I'm saying like I really really appreciate what you've put put out there and the fact that Primos you got to support our prima ingrid and getting this thing More and more get her some of those coins Take care of her

[00:51:02] Some of the webtoons have been animated you think that would ever happen with kiss bet Oh um No, no I don't I don't I don't know it would be a dream come true, of course, but I don't know who knows If anybody wants to animate it Call me

[00:51:24] Okay, okay, we know some people who never know You know, how our house animation now they're here in Texas. They should be you know Oh Kevin knows people he's he's been around. He's a ping pong Dancing around No, yep

[00:51:40] I'm just a fly on the wall buzzing of evil's faces Nah, man, you're cool people's you're cool people's but ingrid um, you know We're winding down here

[00:51:48] You know, we usually end up the show kind of like things that we're kind of obsessed with or really want to just I'm really into this right now and you know having you on

[00:51:56] We want primos to kind of know a little more in depth like what are you right now reading watching Listening to consuming just something that you know what like I'm really into this right now and maybe we can dive in and be part of that

[00:52:08] fandom do you have anything like that? Um, I'm trying to think if I've been watching anything lately I can only think of random Netflix shows random Netflix shows still count random works We'll come back to you good. How's that?

[00:52:26] You're like not the thing is my the things I enjoy are not at all like Things I write all the time like I'm super into like that dark Uh crime documentary type of stuff. You're like the human centipede No, oh no

[00:52:45] But I but I really like like zombie shows and like that kind of stuff like um, or there's a And a series I just finished watching on Netflix called I think it's called the killer paradox. I think it's a korean show

[00:53:00] The three door the um three body problem three body problem. No not that one. That one's really good too That was good too. I like that one. I haven't seen that one yet. I just yeah, it's good. It's good

[00:53:11] The other one I watched it's also based on a webtoon. It's called killer games killing games I did the killer paradox. I've seen it But the killer paradox and if we all have not watched it, I only watched two episodes and I'll be fair to you

[00:53:29] I watched the first episode of to me and why for like I am not into this because they it was like very abstract and and yeah, like main character Is and i'm not giving too much away

[00:53:41] but point is that there's a situation in which he gets away with murder in a sense And you he starts testing the limits of how far he can push this But yet the universe around them are all idiots or something because they can't put one and one together

[00:53:55] And he keeps getting super lucky and you're like There's no growth in this character. Like at all for me. That's how I feel but I think it's It's worth checking out, but I think for me. It was just not

[00:54:10] Yeah, yeah, I mean I must say it was the best but I'm also saying I really enjoyed it Oh, but you have fun. You have fun, you know, everybody has their their fun time

[00:54:19] Kevin have you been reading or doing anything recently something new that people can kind of check out maybe or Working on the comic. There's this. Well, I'm working on the comic but now that school's out finally But also there's this um, this is animated show

[00:54:33] It's got a second season Based on a little known comic book character Super Superman I think it's his name. Oh Yeah, so yeah, my adventures To just came out. I'm into that definitely, you know with x-band 97 Ending is the perfect time to pick up the next superhero series

[00:54:54] I really am loving the retelling of the way they're revisiting all these old superman mythos and Reinventing them almost shoujo like, you know, go with that Also when you mentioned webtoon At or when I mentioned webtoon adaptations and you mentioned that there's a few others

[00:55:11] One that I like a lot is lookism Which is which is a comic that I didn't think I'd get into it first But eventually it really grew on me and and in the animated version They cleaned up some of the problems I had with the early chapters

[00:55:24] they fixed them already in the in the show and it works really well after that and um, and it's just it's Yeah, both good animated shows. I highly suggest Yeah, I think I read most of Yeah, I'm pretty far back on lookism

[00:55:40] That's why I said yours is only one of the few that i'm actually up to date on right now Kevin Garcia approved Big on there All right, um Ellie what about you? What's coming around your band? I know we're recovering from the blackouts of north texas, but

[00:55:56] But I don't have a lot of reading done because we didn't have internet. So I read I read um A comic book called basal and oregano. It's a really cute graphic novel lgbt said fantasy setting um at a cooking school wizarding cooking school

[00:56:12] Um, and it was super cute. The art is adorable. I I couldn't name Anyone who worked on it though. I'd have to look it up, but it was really adorable. I read it all once sitting

[00:56:22] Um, I I binge read a lot. Um, I also read my friend michael abstractos fantasy comic book This weekend to come to find out there was a little like thank you blurb to me in the comic book

[00:56:33] I didn't know that he put that in there. So I'm a cool it it made my day I was like, oh because he he does a lot of fun Fantasy settings and explore different styles. It's really really cool. Um, that's most of the books that I've done

[00:56:47] Before the power outage and craziness occurred I binge watched britcherton for the first time for the very first time got through the first two seasons I'm hooked. I'm part of that I'm blah blah blah. I love britcherton You're a britcherton

[00:57:04] You're a bridge. You're a bridge your townie bridge your town. Oh, bridge your town Okay, that's a good thing. I think No, yeah, no one had pitched it to me

[00:57:14] No one had told me like what it's about and finally like I was like, I just need to watch the trailer I watched the trailer. I'm like, I gotta watch this right now Like what is like jane air with attitude? Is that what it is? But raunchy

[00:57:26] Yeah, it's yeah, it's it's like it's like cheese man Back in those times And I also haven't seen it It's it's it's very salacious. It's so drama. It's salacious drama but pretty Well, me I've been bouncing around I've been bouncing around

[00:57:49] I've been listening to a lot of music recently. I've rediscovered stereo lab I don't know if anybody remembers stereo lab from back in the day A lot of experimental music a lot of like just mixing they were they were hitting big

[00:58:02] Right when grunge took off, but they were not grunge They were just a mix of like dance music a 60s electronic You know just rock and roll with some of the newer like a technology edm music if you will

[00:58:14] Stereo lab just kind of you if you if you enjoy music like as far as the making of music And open minded to those weird sounds where you

[00:58:22] My son sometimes me will sit there and we'll listen to stuff that makes you almost anxious because you just don't know where the song is going Because it doesn't keep that same cadence

[00:58:31] And so if you're okay with that uneasiness and then you get a great surprise at the end Feels like one of my stories It's it's worth it stereo lab has been in my head and then orbit padilla

[00:58:43] Over padilla is a singer or latino creator. He's a rapper and performer He had a song come out last week called sabor just dope Really really good And he had a single that came out and he's just releasing one by one

[00:58:55] Uh, it's called chicano poetry. We posted on our on our feed a lot over padilla Check him out and as far as reading i've been rereading american gods um Neil gayman Just a huge fan of his work. We've already talked about sand man and everything he's worked on

[00:59:11] But rereading american gods if anybody out there has not read this book I almost highly recommend it Because i because a lot of times i will get a book on tape and i'll listen to it while i'm doing a long drive

[00:59:23] because i do long drives all over the country um, and Uh, so i listened to good omen's that way, you know, I really enjoyed it Yeah, and then i was gonna get i rented from the library the audiobook of

[00:59:34] uh of american gods that and most of the audiobooks are like four or five hours This one was like i think eight or nine hours and i was like wow I don't think i'm gonna finish it this trip. So maybe later

[00:59:47] No, like i'm not kidding like i have I have the book i have the book you have like This is like my fourth time reading it So I have like different instances of it and i've heard the the audio version which is 16 hours by the way

[00:59:59] There we go when i listen to i knew i knew it was ridiculously long eight was not long enough 16 hours it had the cast from the tv series doing the voices for all of the characters

[01:00:09] So because they did a tv series for as well a star series very adult very out. Trust me very very adult because the book is but It's really well done the voice acting is awesome and i'm rereading and it just really

[01:00:20] Motivates you to start writing again and going man There's a lot of history that all the people from all over the world have brought into this country And we tend to just kind of overlook them for what's new and shiny

[01:00:31] Right and and forget that these stories these cultures that come together our culture, you know brings together There's some algum Walter said to kuma one point say we're a fruit salad of a country that you know, we mix together

[01:00:44] Like it's just joy for all these stories. So american gods kind of hits that It scratches that itch for me. It really does Uh, but that's really what i've been into right now listening to a lot of music reading some new gaming and as far as watching I'm

[01:00:58] I'm watching welcome to rexham. I love soccer I'm a big fan So that ryan reynolds and rob mechelhenny from always sunday in philadelphia. They bought a welsh soccer team And so you follow their story. Yeah, you follow their story

[01:01:12] From like the bottom tier of the league of soccer and they're literally moving up It's an underdog story with soccer and it's them involved. It's behind the scenes documentary. So Yeah, a lot i've been i've been been into recently. So check that stuff out if you're

[01:01:26] Into those things if I can make one more recommendation There's this uh webtoon called the kiss bet Which I feel like people should go check out heard of it. I think I've heard of it too It's so good that the one of the days that we lost power

[01:01:43] Like I like we would have to go down the road to get signal to like communicate with anyone And we needed to for the moment before we came back home and lost all phone signal

[01:01:51] When we went to the parking lot one of my push notifications went through that a new chapter went through I I was like we are not leaving this parking lot until I finished reading this chapter

[01:02:01] Like I told my partner like we're not no hold on. I got to finish reading like it's that good y'all I'm not even joking. Wow Your comic was more important than the tornadoes sitting north Texas

[01:02:17] It should be on the on the when you print it it should be in the back of the of the of the book It must must read during tornado weather, you know, it will keep you safe

[01:02:28] It'll keep you safe make new promises. I like that make new promises ingrid. Um, you know, where can people find you? Like what's one of your socials? Where can people find you your work?
